Role Summary

As a Band 6 Occupational Therapist within orthopaedic and medical wards, you will provide advanced, patient‑centred assessment and rehabilitation for individuals recovering from fractures, joint replacements, spinal injuries, complex trauma, acute medical conditions, and functional decline. You will use enhanced clinical reasoning to deliver evidence‑based interventions that promote independence, optimise functional outcomes, and support safe, timely discharge.

Key Responsibilities

You will manage a varied complex caseload with a high degree of autonomy, demonstrating strong decision‑making in areas such as discharge planning, equipment prescription, environmental modification, and risk management.

You will provide supervision, guidance, and informal training to Band 5 OTs, support workers, and students, helping to build clinical capability across the team. You will actively participate in audit, quality improvement, and pathway development to enhance patient flow and rehabilitation standards across orthopaedic and medical wards.

This role requires confident communication, adaptability in a fast‑paced environment, and the ability to balance clinical leadership with hands‑on patient care. You will play a key part in ensuring patients receive high‑quality, holistic rehabilitation that supports their recovery and long‑term wellbeing.

There will be an expectation that you will participate in the 7 day working rota.

There are two posts available, one is 37.5 hours and the other is 32.5 hours.

Perform advanced Occupational Therapy assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions. Use advanced clinical reasoning skills to provide a diagnosis and to develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.

Responsible for managing own caseload and a defined area of the service, working without direct supervision.

Supervise, educate and assess students, assistants and Band 5 staff and provide specialised advice to other health care professionals in the specific clinical area.

Undertake evidence‑based audit and research projects to further develop own clinical practice and development of the service area. Make recommendations on changes to practice to the clinical lead/manager. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to development of service protocols.
