Job Description:

We’re representing a leading organisation in the design and engineering sector that is looking to appoint a Design Technician to join their growing team in Reading.

This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented and technically minded individual to work across a variety of projects, supporting the delivery of innovative design solutions through both 2D drawings and 3D modelling.

The Role

As a Design Technician, you’ll play a key role in translating project requirements into accurate technical drawings and models. Working closely with design, engineering, and project teams, you’ll help ensure solutions are practical, compliant, and aligned with both client expectations and manufacturing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Drafting (Approx. 25%)

  • Produce 2D drawings, including proposal and approval/shop drawings
  • Support the development of material take-offs and schedules
  • Act as a link between engineering teams, internal departments, and clients
  • Contribute across the full project lifecycle, from concept through to delivery

3D Modelling (Approx. 25%)

  • Create detailed 3D models and visualisations for client presentations
  • Develop parametric models to enhance design flexibility and efficiency
  • Ensure models meet ISO 19650 standards
  • Collaborate with designers to deliver accurate and high-quality outputs

Project Collaboration (Approx. 20%)

  • Provide design data that supports engineering processes
  • Work closely with engineering teams to deliver manufacturable solutions
  • Support wider project teams with technical expertise across various stages

Training & Development (Approx. 10%)

  • Stay up to date with industry trends, software, and best practices
  • Participate in training, workshops, and certification programmes
  • Continuously develop technical capability

General Responsibilities (Approx. 20%)

  • Ensure all work aligns with company standards, legislation, and specifications

  • Support business needs, including occasional travel if necessary
  • Carry out any reasonable duties within the scope of the role

About You

Experience & Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English
  • Experience using AutoCAD and Revit in a design environment
  • Familiarity with Inventor (or willingness to learn)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of architectural drawings, specifications, and compliance
  • Knowledge of design and approval processes
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisation skills
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
  • A collaborative team player

Additional Requirements

  • Good IT literacy, including Microsoft Office applications
