The Role

The post holder must be a time‑served plumber, qualified to HNC level, with sufficient post‑apprenticeship experience. While the primary role of the post holder will be to carry out plumbing tasks, this role also has an emphasis on supporting the Estates Manager with all aspects of water compliance & maintenance. The successful applicant will also have responsibilities to assist with training and education of apprentices and adult trainees, ensuring they gain the necessary training and experience to meet the needs of their training programme. This post is eligible for pay enhancements.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern

  • Location: Royal Alexandria Hospital, Corsebar Road, Paisley, PA2 9PN
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working hours: 36 hours per week, full‑time
  • Shift pattern: Day shifts Monday to Friday

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and comfortable environment for the provision of clinical care.
  • Ascertain desired action using acquired skills and abilities to expedite best solution for desired outcome and assist putting solutions into practice.
  • Complete Planned Preventative Maintenance in accordance with organisational and manufacturers recommendation, using appropriate tools, test equipment and recording details of work carried out, to prevent breakdowns and maintain optimal operational ability.
  • Respond to breakdowns, evaluate situation and take corrective action to ensure minimal disruption and damage.
  • Use BMS (Building Management System) computer effectively to set parameters and record data on a wide range of building services to provide correct environmental conditions and early warning of service faults (Medical gas, heating, water, power etc.).
  • Maintain, repair and commission patient‑related equipment and services such as sterilisers, washer disinfectors, operating lights and tables, dental chairs, medical gas plant etc., to ensure a safe environment for staff and patients.
  • Carry out checks, repair, test and maintain specialised hospital equipment (e.g., sterilisers, washer‑disinfectors) to required standards as per SHTM 2030 Pt 3 and SHTM 2010 Pt 3.
  • Measure up jobs for new installations and alterations, check plan drawings and on‑site plans, work out best route to run supplies and services, measure up and advise supervisor of materials required.
  • Act as a highly skilled competent person to maintain medical gas piped systems and associated plant in compliance with SHTM 02‑01 Pt B, following formal training and certification.
  • Carry out checks of medical gas plant, including main liquid oxygen tanks, nitrous oxide and medical air manifolds, vacuum and medical air compressors.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Served a recognised apprenticeship in Electrical, Mechanical Engineering or Plumbing, equivalent to SVQ Level 4 or higher national diploma.
  • Knowledge of procedures for mechanical and gas maintenance and repair of electrical equipment; BTEC/HNC Level or City and Guilds plus relevant post‑apprenticeship training or equivalent experience.
  • Successfully completed a recognised course of multi‑skilling training to enable full flexible working across all three disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of NHS Scotland Technical Standards, “Scottish Health Technical Memoranda (SHTMs)” operational and management procedures.
  • Ability to work unsupervised.
