Prison officer – HMP Guys Marsh

Location

Yeovil (HMP Guys Marsh, Guy’s Marsh, Shaftesbury SP7 0AH)

Salary and Working Hours

  • Starting salary £35,875 for a 39‑hour week with 20% unsocial.
  • Training: 37 hours per week. Post‑training options: 37, 39 or 41 hour weeks.
  • Annual holiday 25 days, rising to 30 days after 10 years.
  • Additional benefits: Civil Service pension (28.97% employer contribution), cycle‑to‑work scheme, travel loans and other benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Protect the public and make a positive impact on prisoners’ lives.
  • Act as a peacekeeper, counsellor or teacher depending on daily needs.
  • Build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners.
  • Support colleagues as part of a single team ensuring safety of the prison and its workforce.
  • Work a variety of shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays.

Qualifications

  • At least 18 years of age at start of employment.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements and hold the right to work in the UK.
  • Pass medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
  • For high‑security prisons (category A) have lived in the UK for the last 3 years.
  • Be able to communicate in English (and Welsh if specified in Wales).

Recruitment Process

The candidate will complete online tests (judgement, numerical, written and spoken English). Successful candidates may undertake a second values‑based test and attend an online assessment centre (OAC).

Travel to Work

A driving licence and own transport is beneficial but not essential.
