Clinical Nurse Specialist – Prostate Cancer

Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to play a pivotal role in stabilising and improving the prostate cancer pathway at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen and across the Health Board.

This keyworker and pathway leadership role supports prostate cancer patients from diagnosis through treatment, surveillance and survivorship. The post holder will work across the entire prostate pathway, ensuring timely diagnostics, effective MDT functioning, high‑quality patient communication, and protocol‑driven follow‑up in line with national cancer standards.

The role is established to convert recent diagnostic capacity improvements into sustained pathway performance, improved patient experience, and reduced harm from delays.

Key Duties

  • Act as the designated keyworker for prostate cancer patients, providing consistent, personalised support across diagnosis, treatment and follow‑up.
  • Lead and coordinate the prostate cancer diagnostic pathway, including straight‑to‑MRI and LATP biopsy pathways.
  • Play a central role in MDT preparation, attendance and follow‑up, ensuring complete, high‑quality clinical information and timely communication of outcomes.
  • Deliver CNS‑led clinics, including PSA surveillance, active monitoring and treatment follow‑up, supporting the Health Board’s wider follow‑up transformation agenda.
  • Support patients undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and systemic therapies, providing education, symptom management and early escalation of concerns.
  • Deliver holistic needs assessments, treatment summaries and survivorship care planning in line with national cancer standards.
  • Support the rollout of remote monitoring and digital tools (e.g. Patients Know Best) for prostate cancer follow‑up.
  • Work collaboratively across Urology, Radiology, Pathology, Oncology, Cancer Services and Primary Care to improve pathway flow and experience.
  • Contribute to service development, audit, quality improvement and performance recovery, with a clear focus on Faster Diagnosis Standard and 62‑day USC compliance.

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Registered Nurse (Part 1)
  • Current NMC Registration
  • Masters Degree or equivalent experience
  • Expert level knowledge in clinical speciality
  • Knowledge of service improvement
  • Able to undertake a literature search and critically appraise research papers
  • Teaching qualification
  • Advanced clinical skills
  • Non‑medical Prescribing (v300)

Experience

  • Experience in the relevant specialty
  • Experience of working in a multi‑professional environment
  • Experience of managing a ward/area/department
  • Experience of working with pre‑registration nursing/midwifery students in a mentorship role
  • Experience of undertaking audit
  • Experience of participating in research

Language Skills

  • Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
