Specialist in Anaesthesia

This position requires cross‑site working at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital.
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Specialist Doctor to join our friendly and sociable team in the Anaesthetic department. The Anaesthetic service currently consists of 42 Consultants, 20 SAS Doctors and 20 Resident Doctors, and covers all the areas expected from a large hospital. Medical specialties include inpatient nephrology and satellite dialysis units on 2 other sites.
The main clinical duties will include theatre sessions, critical care and obstetrics. In addition, the successful candidate will participate in the out‑of‑hours / emergency cover rota, complying with the Trust working time directive.
Applicants must have full registration with the General Medical Council and continue to hold a License to Practise.
- Completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades.
- Equivalence in recent experience from other medical grades and overseas grades will also be accepted.
- Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist grade generic capabilities framework.
Main duties of the job
Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was one of the first wave of Foundation Hospitals, achieving this status by consistently receiving three stars in the Government’s star rating system. Since achieving Foundation status the Trust has maintained its position and was rated as Excellent for Well‑Led and Caring by the Care Quality Commission. The Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and Pain provides anaesthetic cover for three of the Trust’s sites, maintains Critical Care facilities on two of the Trust’s sites and Chronic Pain Clinics on two sites. The successful applicant will join the Department’s on‑call rota.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
- Completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a SAS grade or equivalent in anaesthesia, with sub‑specialty interest (ITU, trauma, vascular, paediatrics, chronic pain). Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades and overseas will also be accepted.
- Must have or be eligible for full registration with the General Medical Council at time of appointment and continue to hold a License to Practise.
- FRCA or equivalent
- Higher qualification in Anaesthesia e.g., EDRA, sub‑specialty fellowship
Experience
- Demonstrate clinical experience and competence in all aspects of anaesthesia and in various sub‑specialities of interest.
- Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the role.
- Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk, including when to seek help and prioritising clinical need.
- Adherence to professional requirements, participation in annual appraisal, job planning and reviews of performance and progression.
- Understanding current issues within anaesthesia and the future direction of the specialty.
- Understanding current issues within the wider NHS.
Teaching and Training
- Experience and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non‑medical staff.
- Academic achievements and familiarity with research methods resulting in publications.
