About the Role
As a Quality Engineer at Aberdeen Adviser, you will play a key role in ensuring that quality is embedded throughout the software development lifecycle. Reporting to the Quality Engineering Chapter Lead, you will work closely with engineers, product managers, and designers to champion a quality‑first mindset, ensuring our products meet the highest standards of reliability, usability, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and contribute to automated and exploratory tests, ensuring software meets functional and non‑functional requirements, particularly for complex and critical scenarios.
- Collaborate closely with developers, product managers, and designers to ensure quality is built in from the start.
- Define test scenarios and coverage, breaking down acceptance criteria into happy path, edge, and negative cases.
- Establish test strategy and layering (unit, component, API, contract, integration, E2E).
- Guide teams in test planning and ensure appropriate coverage across performance, security, accessibility, and usability.
- Foster a quality‑first mindset, mentoring engineers on best practices in testing, CI/CD, and automation.
- Build and evolve test frameworks and reusable components, enabling teams to implement automated testing and integrate into CI/CD pipelines.
- Perform targeted exploratory testing to uncover edge cases and usability concerns.
- Advocate for service reliability and real‑world testing scenarios, including performance under load, failover conditions, and system resilience.
- Write clear and reproducible defect reports and contribute to technical documentation.
- Take a polyglot approach to testing tools, selecting the best frameworks for different tech stacks and projects.
- Continuously improve testing practices, standards, and tooling, sharing knowledge with the wider team.
- Review PRs to ensure test quality, coverage, and adherence to standards.
- Enable teams to adopt best practices, patterns, and testing standards.
- Support fast feedback loops through CI/CD and shift‑left testing approaches.
- Work across multiple teams, balancing priorities based on risk, delivery needs, and quality maturity.
- Leverage AI‑driven testing approaches to generate tests from requirements, analyse results, improve coverage, support execution (including reducing flaky failures), and ensure usage aligns with defined standards, guardrails, and human review.
Qualifications
- Experience in manual and automated testing, with an understanding of when to apply each.
- Strong collaboration and coaching skills, with the ability to mentor engineers on best practices in quality.
- Knowledge of testing frameworks and tools (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Jest, JUnit, Postman, or similar).
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure preferred) and CI/CD pipelines for automated testing.
- Prior exposure to a modern tech stack environment – ideally JavaScript and/or TypeScript.
- Strong problem‑solving skills and the ability to think like a customer, ensuring usability and accessibility.
- Experience working in agile environments, embedding testing within cross‑functional teams.
- A proactive mindset, always looking for ways to improve quality and streamline testing processes.
- Experience defining test strategy and coverage across multiple layers.
- Ability to work across more than one team and influence without direct ownership.
- Interest or experience in AI‑driven testing approaches.
