Location: Cardington
Job Description:

Principal Systems Engineer – Embedded & HardwareBedford | Hybrid Working (3 Days Onsite)

Pimlico Banks are seeking an experienced Principal Systems Engineer to act as the technical authority across a complex embedded hardware and software development programme.

This is a senior technical leadership role where you will work closely with internal stakeholders and external engineering partners to guide technical direction, review designs, influence architecture and support successful product delivery.

Working at system level, you will combine strong engineering expertise with the ability to build effective relationships, challenge technical decisions, manage suppliers and influence outcomes across multidisciplinary teams.

The role is based in Bedford with hybrid working (3 days onsite) and includes occasional international travel, typically 3-5 trips per year.

The Opportunity

This is not a purely hands‑on development role. Instead, you will act as a key technical authority across embedded software, electronics and system development activities, helping to shape technical solutions and ensure products are delivered to the highest standards.

You will work closely with third‑party engineering partners, reviewing proposed designs, identifying risks, solving technical challenges and ensuring solutions are robust, manufacturable and aligned with programme objectives.

Success in this role will depend as much on your ability to communicate, influence and build strong working relationships as it will on your technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the technical authority across embedded hardware and software development activities
  • Provide technical leadership across systems engineering, architecture and integration activities
  • Review, challenge and influence technical designs and proposed solutions
  • Define and influence system‑level requirements and technical direction
  • Work closely with third‑party engineering partners and suppliers
  • Identify, assess and mitigate technical risks throughout the development lifecycle
  • Lead and participate in technical design reviews
  • Support verification and validation activities
  • Ensure products are robust, manufacturable and suitable for production
  • Collaborate with engineering, quality, manufacturing and project teams
  • Communicate technical information effectively to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Support international suppliers and development partners
