Job Description

Healthcare Support Workers (HCSW) are essential providers of everyday care for patients. The role is rewarding; you will need to be organised, adaptable, resilient, and hardworking. You will have strong prioritisation skills, good observational skills and empathy for others, and will be willing to work hands‑on with patients.

Salary: £25,272. Work location: Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, PO6 3LY. Hours per week: Full time, 37.5 hours (may consider part‑time). Contract type: Permanent.

Key Responsibilities

Under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals, you will assist the team with the provision of clinical care for a defined group of patients. You will take all possible steps to safeguard the welfare, safety and security of patients, visitors and staff.

Typical day‑to‑day duties

  • Provide care for patients, helping to maintain personal hygiene, including handling bodily fluids and excretion.
  • Provide physical comfort for patients while ensuring privacy and dignity.
  • Wash and dress patients, and help them move safely.
  • Serve meals and assist with feeding.
  • Assist with cleaning tasks and bed making.
  • Monitor patient conditions and report to the senior team.
  • Record information in patient administration systems and assist with administrative duties.
  • Undertake clinical activities such as basic wound care, application of Plaster of Paris, venepuncture, cannulation and ECGs following training and competency evidence.
  • Assist with C‑spine immobilisation and log‑roll techniques.

Most importantly, you will ensure a positive patient experience by treating all patients, relatives and colleagues in accordance with Trust values.

Working patterns

The HCSW role includes a variety of working patterns that attract shift allowances. Internal rotation onto night duty is a requirement of the post.

Qualifications and Experience

  • English and Maths qualification at GCSE/Functional Skills at level 1 (or an internationally recognised equivalent).
  • Completed Care Certificate or ability to complete within 3 months (pro‑rata for part‑time).
  • Complete Knowledge and Behaviour Framework within 6 months of appointment.
  • Compliance with mandatory updates annually (or as required) on an ongoing basis.
  • Level 2 qualification in a health‑related subject or equivalent gained through experience, on‑job training, short courses and work‑based competencies.
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting, community setting or nursing home.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to carry out assigned tasks effectively in a busy environment.
  • Understand and comply with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
  • Completion and maintenance of statutory and mandatory learning activities.
  • Awareness of, understanding and compliance with policies such as Escort Policy, infection control and Health and Safety. The post holder works within the scope of practice under direct and indirect supervision by a registered nurse (training will be provided).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department, ensuring it is compatible and in good working order; will escalated concerns to a registered nurse.
  • Demonstrate a range of core skills to competently undertake personal care for patients and related tasks.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, literacy and numeracy skills.
  • Good observation skills and recognition of the importance of reporting.
