Job Overview
We are seeking a Senior Maternity Support Worker (MSW) to work in Maternity services at UHBW. The role supports the multidisciplinary team across inpatient antenatal and postnatal wards, Central Delivery Suite, Antenatal Clinic (outpatient), Community and Maternity Triage Unit. The MSW will provide direct care to women, birthing people, families and newborns, maintaining high standards of compassionate healthcare.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
A Senior Maternity Support Worker is a core team member delivering direct care and supporting registered practitioners. Responsibilities include:
- Carrying out clinical and non-clinical tasks under supervision.
- Providing care aligned with individual care plans and Trust values.
- Participating in team-based care of women and newborns across various units.
- Maintaining accurate documentation and records.
- Pursuing further training and development to obtain the Care Certificate if necessary.
Working Hours & Contract
Contract: Permanent – Grade Band 3, Full time or Part time.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, shift work including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Location: St Michael’s Hospital, Town Bristol.
Salary: £24,937 – £26,598 per annum (pro rata).
Qualifications & Experience
- Completion of a Care Certificate.
- 5 GCSEs or equivalent including English and Maths.
- Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship with maternity focus or equivalent Level 3 qualification.
- Experience providing care in a healthcare or social setting.
- Ability to work as part of a team, manage time and prioritise tasks.
- Compassionate and caring approach to colleagues, patients and relatives.
- Adaptability to changing situations and policies.
- Commitment to equality and diversity agenda of the Trust.
- Full UK driving licence and access to a car (where required).
Skills & Abilities
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Accurate documentation and record keeping.
- High quality patient care under minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of Maternal and Neonatal observations, venepuncture, heel pricks, ECG.
- Willingness and ability to undertake training within set timelines.
- Flexibility to work a range of shifts, including cross-ward movement.
- Physical and developmental capability for the role.
