Our Medicines Management team offers a unique opportunity for a senior Pharmacy Support Worker in emergency medicine, supporting the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit and Medicine wards. The successful candidate will ensure patients in all areas have access to the medicines they need, playing a vital role in keeping patients safe while supporting patient flow by expediting discharges via our Near Patient Dispensing services. This is an opportunity to make a real difference to patients while working in a supportive and nurturing team.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The ideal candidate will have a can‑do, proactive attitude, excellent communication skills, and be flexible to the constantly changing demands of the hospital.

The nature of the role will also mean candidates need to be able to lift heavy items and cover large distances in order to support colleagues across the medical areas of the hospital.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

  • 2 GCSEs or equivalent grades A* – C or 4–9 in English and Maths (equivalent evidence must be demonstrated if qualifications gained outside the UK)
  • NVQ 2 in Pharmacy or other Level 2 approved GPhC qualification for pharmacy support staff or equivalent experience
  • Supervisory qualification or equivalent demonstrable experience of supervision
  • Previous pharmacy experience (hospital or community) or supervisory experience
  • Must be able to commit to completing an in‑house training programme within 6 months of starting. Opportunities to progress are available but may require additional qualifications to be eligible.
  • Must be able to work late evenings, bank holidays and week‑end working according to rota requirements
  • Health and physical abilities sufficient for the post (reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act)
  • Required to lift and handle packages up to 15 kg on a repetitive basis. Reasonable adjustments may be made.
  • Required to move pallets weighing between 500 and 600 kg using an unpowered pallet truck daily (receipts posts only)

Desirable criteria

  • Other healthcare qualifications
  • GCSEs in science‑based or other role specific relevant subjects
  • Previous experience in health or social care (if not pharmacy)Experience in stock control (receiving, maintaining and/or issuing stock)
  • Clinical trials or research experience (clinical trials only)
