Location: Leatherhead
Job Description:

About the role

The Senior Highways Engineer will provide technical design input into proposing and detailing design solutions for pavement renewal schemes across the Connect Plus Services (M25) network. The role offers technical ownership of assigned pavement schemes, leading design development from concept through to detailed design, and the opportunity to follow through practical construction onsite across the M25 network. The engineer will lead engineering reviews with stakeholders, coordinate with Asset engineers, Project Managers and designers, and ensure pavement designs are safe, efficient, cost‑effective and meet national and Connect Plus DBFO Co. standards. The position can be based at Dartford, Leatherhead or South Mimms, with travel to sites across the M25 network.

What you’ll be doing

  • Undertake optioneering and feasibility assessments of pavement design solutions in the value management workshops, considering whole‑life cost, performance, sustainability and buildability.
  • Lead pavement investigations, including preparing investigation scopes, reviewing and interpreting data, and developing appropriate design solutions based on findings.
  • Work closely with Project Managers to lead the internal Gateway reviews during the design phase to ensure timely sign‑off at each Gateway.
  • Check and review design deliverables—including drawings, CDM documents and specifications—produced by internal and external designers to ensure completeness, compliance and alignment with the brief before submission to National Highways.
  • Identify and manage Departures from Standards, including early identification of non‑compliances and preparation, coordination and submission of Departure applications in line with client procedures and agreed design programmes.
  • Be technically accountable for the design solutions, engaging with engineering reviews to drive innovative solutions that are safely installed and best for the asset need.
  • Manage and coordinate internal and external design resources to achieve delivery of design outputs to agreed programme and budget.
  • Report to the Design Lead, Principal Engineer and Project Manager on performance against budget and programme.
