Job Summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust seeks a dedicated Head and Neck/ENT Surgeon to join the department on a 10‑PA job plan.

This post is open to candidates with subspecialty training in Head and Neck Surgery who can complement and enhance the existing expertise within the department. The successful applicant will support the Head and Neck Unit, including the management of urgent cancer referrals to achieve national targets.

Applicants should have fellowship training in major Head and Neck Surgery, including thyroid and complex airway surgery, and ideally possess consultant‑level experience in these areas.

The role includes commitments to outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and on‑call duties, with dedicated time for administration and supporting professional activities.

The appointee will be expected to contribute actively to clinical governance, teaching and audit, supporting the department’s commitment to continuous improvement and high‑quality patient care.

Access to a car is essential for on‑call responsibilities.

General Responsibilities

  • Work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of the service.
  • Observe agreed policies on clinical matters and follow standing orders and financial instructions of the Hospital.
  • Comply with legislation concerning the management of employees.
  • Adhere to the Trust Infection Control Policy and attend infection control training as required.
  • Commit to Continuing Professional Development satisfying the Royal College of Surgeons criteria.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Run clinics and theatres, and participate in the ENT consultant on‑call rota.
  • Support the department in achieving targets for urgent cancer referrals via the 2‑week referral pathway.
  • Perform Head and Neck resections, including laryngectomy, complex airway surgery, free‑flap reconstruction, transoral robotic surgery and skull base surgery.
  • Carry out high‑volume low‑complexity day‑case surgeries at the BHH site.
  • Contribute to training and teaching of junior doctors and allied health professionals.

Person Specification: Qualifications

  • Registered with GMC, FRCS (ORL HNS).
  • CCT holder or within 6 months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.
  • Disclosure and Barring Service Check.
  • UK professional registration and current Skilled Worker sponsorship, if required.

Pay and Employment

Pay scheme: Hospital Medical and Dental. Band: Consultant. Salary: £113,565.00 to £150,569.00 yearly.

Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time.
