About the role

The Next Generation Neural Interfaces (NGNI) Lab at Imperial College London is seeking a Research Associate to join the ARIA-funded RESCUE project (Regenerative Electroactive Scaffolds for Circuit Unification via Electromodulation). The postholder will lead the design, development and validation of the electronic instrumentation and implantable microsystems used to deliver controlled electrical stimulation (electromodulation) to electroactive scaffolds for neural repair and circuit reconnection. The role will involve circuit and system design, hardware prototyping, experimental characterisation, and the development of research prototypes towards future implantable deployment.

RESCUE is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the NGNI Lab, Imperial College Bioengineering and the University of Oxford, developing regenerative electroactive scaffolds that combine biomaterials with targeted electromodulation to restore connectivity in damaged neural circuits. As a Research Associate in the lab, you will join a collaborative and highly skilled team and take responsibility for the electronic and microsystem layer of the platform – from stimulation and interface electronics through to wireless powering, data telemetry and system integration.

What you would be doing

The postholder will be expected to take initiative in planning and delivering research, contribute to project management, prepare high-quality publications, support grant applications, and provide guidance to students and junior researchers.

What we are looking for

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals
  • Experience in integrated circuit (IC/ASIC) design, microsystem design, or electronic hardware development for biomedical or implantable devices.
  • Experience in the design, prototyping and experimental characterisation of electronic systems or instrumentation.

What we can offer you

  • The opportunity to continue your research career at a world‑leading institution.
  • The opportunity to work within a collaborative and multidisciplinary research environment.
  • The opportunity to contribute to research with real‑world translational potential.
  • Opportunities to publish in high‑quality journals, present at national and international conferences, and contribute to grant proposals and future research directions.

Further information

This is a full‑time post. This role is for a fixed‑term contract for 11 months.

The post will be based in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London, within the Bioelectronics Group and the Next Generation Neural Interfaces Lab.

For any specific queries regarding the post please contact Prof Tim Constandinou (t.constandinou@imperial.ac.uk)

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
