Our Operational Support Officers play a critical role, providing excellent customer service and administrative support to court and tribunal users, judiciary and management.

About us

HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family Courts and Tribunals in England and Wales. We support court users and colleagues within HMCTS, ensuring access to potentially life‑changing justice. We’re looking for individuals committed to public service and making a difference in people’s lives.

Your role

As part of a team, you will contribute to overall operational, performance and service standard targets across your area. You will progress cases through the court/tribunal system and provide customer service and administrative support. Regular contact with court/tribunal users, including members of the judiciary and the legal profession, is expected.

You will be adaptable, able to multi‑task and effectively carry out a variety of duty, both office‑based and in court:

  • Prepare papers and files for court, tribunals, hearings and meetings; process and handle sensitive information accurately.
  • Create and update records digitally, interpreting information required on a court file accurately.
  • Communicate with the public, the judiciary, other court and tribunal users and representatives of other agencies and organisations.
  • Support the smooth running of court proceedings, preparing court/ hearing rooms and ensuring courts run efficiently.
  • When required, act as the essential first point of contact for all court users, including vulnerable witnesses and their legal representatives.

Your knowledge, skills and experience

  • Customer service skills; ability to work in a service‑led, customer‑facing environment.
  • Digital and administrative skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Communication and organisational skills; confident verbal, telephone, digital and written communication.
  • Resilience and empathy to handle sensitive information and situations.
  • A team player; able to work collaboratively and flexibly to deliver business objectives.

Working arrangements & Further Information

These operational roles are customer‑facing and require court‑based activity. Standard full‑time work is 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday). HMCTS welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing patterns that meet business needs, agreed prior to appointment. The role may be hybrid, with a minimum of 60% of time spent in an office.

Locations: Birmingham Employment Tribunal, Centre City Tower, Hill Street, Birmingham, B5 4UA or Birmingham Civil Justice Centre, Bull Street, Birmingham, B4 6DS.

Skilled Worker Visa

This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas under current immigration rules. If you held a Skilled Worker visa prior to 22 July 2025, please discuss this during vetting. Successful applicants must ensure they have legal right to live and work in the UK.

Civil Service Nationality Rules

This job is open to:

  • UK nationals
  • Republic of Ireland nationals
  • Commonwealth nationals with right to work in the UK
  • EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein nationals and family members with settled or pre‑settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, and those who have made a valid application for settled or pre‑settled status
  • Individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain eligible to apply for EUSS on or before 31 December 2020
  • Turkish nationals and certain family members with accrued right to work in the Civil Service
