About the Retail Customer Assistant Role

Nineteen38 Coffee™ powered by Royal Voluntary Service is part of the community fabric, offering beverages and healthy food choices. Our customers support volunteer action in the community. As a Retail Customer Assistant, you will work alongside a friendly team of employees and volunteers to run our busy café at Wimbledon Train Station.

Responsibilities

  • Provide friendly, helpful and efficient service at all times.
  • Welcome customers, inform them about specials or new products, answer questions, and take orders and payments.
  • Operate the till and complete cash reconciliation.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness, complying with Health and Safety and food hygiene standards.
  • Ensure all stock and displays are replenished regularly and order supplies when required.

Working Hours

Example 25‑hour role: 25 hours per week across five shifts (06:30–11:30, 11:30–16:30, 15:00–20:00), including fixed weekend shifts on Saturday and Sunday, with three additional weekday shifts. Paid overtime may be available during busy periods or to cover absences.Example 15‑hour role: 15 hours per week on a flexible rota, primarily Monday to Friday with occasional weekend shifts. Typical shift times are the same as above, subject to business needs. Paid overtime may be available.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Previous experience in a barista/café environment (advantageous).
  • Remain calm and professional in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Deliver excellent customer service.
  • Knowledge of EPOS systems.
  • Knowledge of Food Safety and Health & Safety procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Enjoy working within a passionate team and independently when required.
  • Skilled at organising, delegating and prioritising.
  • Flexible to business needs and able to attend out‑of‑hours training if required.
  • Knowledge and experience of general administrative processes.
  • Experience with email and internet is required.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepare hot and cold drinks.
  • Serve and prepare freshly made food such as baguettes, cakes, sandwiches and pastries.
  • Welcoming customers, informing them about specials or new products, answering questions and accepting orders and payments.
  • Operate the till and undertake cash reconciliation.
  • Receive incoming deliveries, distribute, maintain and date rotate stock as appropriate. Assist with accurate completion of regular stock checks.
  • Engage with volunteers to direct and lead by example for a great volunteer experience.
  • Maintain high levels of cleanliness, complying with Health and Safety and food hygiene standards.
  • Push loaded trolleys of stock for short distances as required.
