Role Overview

BAM is a trusted name in construction, delivering high‑quality infrastructure projects. As a Groundworker Apprentice you will learn essential skills and support the delivery of multi‑million projects, leaving a lasting legacy and positive change in our communities.

A full‑time earn‑and‑learn apprenticeship, you will build the foundations for a successful career, progressing to a Level 2 Groundworker Apprenticeship and, upon completion, to further learning and leadership training towards becoming a Works Manager.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Preparing and levelling construction sites.
  • Laying foundations, drainage systems and concrete.
  • Operating and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Following health and safety protocols on site.
  • Working as part of a team to complete a variety of groundwork tasks.

You will gain hands‑on experience on the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a transformative, multi‑billion‑pound railway programme that will better connect passengers in the North between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

Academic Requirements

  • GCSE Maths and English grade 5 or above is desirable; however, you will have the opportunity to build on your academic achievements whilst on the apprenticeship.
  • To be eligible you must not already hold a similar qualification of the same level.

Additional Requirements

  • A driving licence is desirable or you should be able to obtain one during the apprenticeship.
  • You may be required to move away to work on a project; BAM supports this by paying a living‑away allowance.
