Clinical Engineering Apprentice (Clinical Engineering) | The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust

The successful Clinical Engineering Apprentice will be enrolled onto the Level 6 Apprenticeship Standard Control and Technical Support Engineer and will undergo a 4‑year Engineering Technician Apprenticeship programme of work‑based learning combined with academic courses (education provider to be finalised). Work‑based learning will involve time in all nine Clinical Engineering Sections at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (including West Park Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital) and in the Clinical Engineering Quality Management Section. The apprentice will be expected to complete an extensive logbook to support application to the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) and to evidence Continuous Professional Development (CPD) after qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Observe, learn and assist under supervision in the full range of work of the Clinical Engineering Department, becoming competent in electronic and engineering activities.
  • Perform medical device safety checks for patients and staff, planned preventive/corrective maintenance, inventory management, device lifecycle management, acceptance and safety testing, device decommissioning, and assistance in maintenance of records.
  • Maintain accurate records of all work undertaken and ensure compliance with safety standards, technical procedures, and departmental policies.
  • Assist with quality improvement projects, applying lean methodology, defining project scope, collecting data, implementing required changes and checking their effectiveness.
  • Update training resources for the wider Clinical Engineering team, submit updates to IQM, and support Health and Safety audits and reviews.
  • Respond quickly and efficiently to all requests regarding medical devices, exercising judgment and escalating to the appropriate qualified Clinical Technologist when necessary.
  • Maintain good working relationships with technical, clinical and support staff.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum GCSE Maths and English Grade C/4 and above (or equivalent).
  • Level 3 qualification in a relevant engineering subject (e.g., BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma) or A levels in Maths and a science subject.
  • All successful candidates will be offered a position conditionally, subject to achieving the required grades and mandatory checks (Disclosure and Barring Service, references, and Occupational Health).
  • Must be a UK resident and eligible for a UK apprenticeship (not a visa holder or without more than three years of full‑time UK work experience).
  • Valid driving licence beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Must be prepared to travel to educational provider bases as required and attend medical device manufacturer and development courses.
  • Ability to work a full‑time schedule.
