Role Summary/Purpose

Our Controls Centre of Excellence, located in Nailsea, near Bristol, has recently identified a need to fill its talent pipeline, by creating an Electronics/software Engineering Apprentice position.

The role provides the basis of learning with potential to specialise as a Hardware Engineer, Software engineer or Systems Engineer in these sectors and can extend from design of integrated circuits through to complete systems.

Apprenticeship Overview

This is a 4-year apprenticeship following the Embedded electronic Systems design and development engineer program. You will attend college for day release at UCW in Weston super mare and the University of West of England UWE.

You will integrate into and rotate through our Engineering teams of experienced Engineers for an immersive 4 years of hands‑on training. This will go through design and test of various products both hardware and software.

You will gain experience from our teams working within Manufacturing, Electronics / Electrical Design, Embedded Software, Systems Software, and services functions.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to complete an Apprenticeship, to be supported in gaining qualifications in electrical/electronic/Software engineering to Degree level, alongside the Apprentice framework, and deliver a design project, whilst earning.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design functional electronic systems and circuits from component level
  • Write and document structured code to comply with industry norms and to allow others to understand and subsequently maintain/modify the code.
  • Develop a test plan for a product that you have developed.
  • Develop a basic project plan including resource planning, time planning, use of contingencies etc. Techniques for predicting pinch points and strategies for timescale recovery.
  • Comprehension of the fundamentals of structured software design.
  • Become competent in the use of Business IT/M systems, which include Engineering Documentation packages, Quality and HSE systems.

Qualifications/Requirements

An apprentice might be expected to have already achieved academic qualifications of 96* UCAS points or above. 3 A-Levels at grade C or above or equivalent, to include Maths + one STEM based subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing, Electronics. Alternatively an Extended BTEC level 3 Diploma in engineering with Distinction.

Plus Five GCSEs at Grade 5 and above including Mathematics, English and Double Science or equivalent qualification. (*Equal to 240 UCAS points. Prior to 2017, equal to Grades C and above.)
