Job Role
The Ethnic Minority Achievement Service maintains a casual register of individuals with strong language skills to serve as bilingual education assistants in nurseries, primary schools and secondary schools across Coventry and the surrounding area, as well as across other Council departments. As a bilingual education assistant you will primarily support newly arrived children to settle into school and begin to learn English. This is a casual post. We anticipate a need for the languages listed below; however, we cannot guarantee that work will be available.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide bilingual support to children who speak English as an additional language.
- Support newly arrived children to settle into school and begin learning English.
- Participate in home visits to investigate family circumstances, with special attention to safeguarding concerns.
- Attend ad hoc meetings with school staff and council departments.
- Travel to schools and other education providers across the city as required.
Availability
Available for at least 4 mornings or 4 afternoons a week, or a mixture of both, during normal school opening times.
Required Qualifications
- Fluent and literate in one or more of the languages listed below.
- Good command of written and spoken English.
- Willingness to work in nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools and colleges across the city.
- Ability to travel to schools and other education providers across the city.

Legislation and Additional Information
- Exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974; appointment conditional upon satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
- Guaranteed interview scheme available to members of the armed forces and veterans, individuals currently or previously in care, and those with disabilities or long‑term health conditions.
- Interview dates: 17 July 2026 and 20 July 2026; conducted in‑person at a City Council building in Coventry.
