Role Purpose

ERS is a leading underwriter of a wide range of specialist motor insurance products. Within ERS’ strategy of being the UK’s leading specialist motor insurer, our focus is on delivering sustainable, high‑margin growth through the provision of quality propositions to a wide range of broker partners.

The Senior Underwriter’s primary responsibilities are for the execution of our underwriting strategy and development of our underwriting appetite, working closely with the Commercial Lines Class Head and Product Manager(s).

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with key stakeholders to shape and grow the portfolio ensuring our strategy supports delivery of the financial plan.
  • Defining, measuring and tracking portfolio and pricing metrics to evaluate product performance and support the Class Product Manager(s) to implement strategies that improve profitability and support business objectives.
  • Integrating external market intelligence into product strategy ensuring our offering remains competitive, commercially viable and aligned with business objectives.
  • Identifying trends and evaluating conclusions using up‑to‑date data analytical methods and technology.
  • Leading the development of the underwriting strategy for our product(s) based on market knowledge and product expertise while executing the strategy with the product delivery team.
  • Managing portfolio performance through analysis of results, execution of selection and pricing strategies and providing recommendations that drive continuous performance improvement, ensuring financial plans are met or exceeded.
  • Working alongside the Product Performance Analysts to provide direction and support, improving their knowledge and utilising their skills to support strategic goals.
  • Refining underwriting appetite continuously to take advantage of market opportunities and outperform peers through superior risk selection and proactive management of the business mix.
  • Acting as a technical referral point for underwriting team members, brokers and other internal functions, using risk, product and pricing knowledge to inform decisions.
  • Providing feedback to Product Managers & Heads of Class and to the Pricing team regarding the effectiveness of risk pricing models to enhance sophistication and accuracy.
  • Contributing to “first line of defence” activities, using audit and peer‑review tools complemented by exception reporting and performance MI to monitor underwriting activities and ensure compliance with underwriting authorities, agreed processes and regulatory standards.

Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience

  • Ability to collaborate with a talented team to achieve challenging financial targets.
  • Extensive technical knowledge of the product(s), including features, drivers of product performance, market dynamics and customer requirements.
  • Analytical mindset with comprehensive Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Demonstrated gravitas and clarity of purpose to inspire confidence in senior stakeholders, internally and externally.
  • Ability to create coherent and comprehensive Microsoft PowerPoint presentations for various committees, including senior stakeholders.
  • Extensive commercial awareness, spotting and seizing opportunities to enhance financial performance.
  • Deep understanding of pricing practices and methodologies, and experience enhancing pricing capability with insights and feedback on pricing models.
  • Interpersonal skills that build and maintain value‑adding relationships; comfortable having difficult conversations with business‑partners and colleagues.
  • Experience in a sophisticated underwriting control environment, executing “first line of defence” activities with a focus on constant performance improvement.
