Mechanical Design Engineer

Company: SEGULA Technologies
Apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Aylesbury
Job Description:

We have an immediate need for a Mechanical Design Engineer with experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill.

Role Details

Job purpose: To develop innovative mechanical design solutions for current and future aerospace industry challenges on existing and next generation smart motor and power generation technologies.

To lead and deliver project-based engineering work-package activities, ensuring mature and robust mechanical solutions designed to meet manufacturing, cost, and weight targets.

Dimensions

Primary responsibility is to create and support the definition of robust mechanical design solutions for R&D/R&T projects, ensuring designs are technically robust, fit for purpose, and meet business and customer needs.

Support and/or ownership of one or more Engineering Work Packages for the Mechanical Design of products.

Interfacing with Mechanical Engineering, Stress & Thermal, Supply Chain, Industrialisation, Validation & Verification (V&V), Configuration, and Quality.

Responsibility for delivery of engineering solutions that meet Design to Cost and Design to Manufacture/Assembly requirements against programme deliverables.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Improved awareness through regular reporting to the Lead Engineer/s (Principal and/or Senior Principal Engineers), on work package status.
  • The production and maintenance of CAD models, drawings, and parts lists compliant with company standards within assigned work packages.
  • The production and reporting of Design Assurance documentation, including design reports, test procedures, and hand/stress calculations (interference fits, thermal growth, hoop and tensile stresses, thread loadings, tolerance analyses) to support the work package(s).
  • Removing risk by supporting engineering design investigations and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities to develop mature products or technical concepts. This involves new technology (R&T and R&D) and improvements to existing product lines (TLS).
  • Familiarity with Product Introduction Processes (PROMPT & DEVELOP) and leadership or support of gateway reviews as appropriate.
  • Authoring, reviewing, and, subject to client approval, signing off technical documentation for Engineering and Through Life Support.
  • Delivery of monthly KPI milestone targets to support project needs and timelines.
  • Delivery of formal and informal training, mentoring, and leadership support to engineering personnel and less experienced staff to ensure continuous improvement of Technical and Behavioural skills across Product Design and Electromechanical Engineering teams and projects.

Key Performance Measures

  • Delivery of high quality, robust designs (models, drawings, BOMs) fit for purpose with a DFA/DFM mentality and a “Right First Time” philosophy.
  • Increased satisfaction from internal and external stakeholders (communication, reporting, support).
  • Delivery against assigned milestones and project tasks met on time and to budget.
  • Design assurance documentation produced is of high quality and aligned with process and procedural requirements.
  • KPIs, agreed and approved in advance, delivered consistently month on month.
  • Performance objectives agreed during annual performance reviews, satisfactorily completed within agreed timescales.
  • Personal development targets met, e.g., competence in programming, increased knowledge of products, processes and procedures.
  • Support and mentoring, generating demonstrable skills growth within the team.
  • Achievement of Engineering Approval status or higher.

Essential

  • A Mechanical, Automotive or Aeronautical Engineering degree or equivalent qualification/work experience.
  • Mechanical design experience using CATIA V5 & Windchill, with rotating equipment such as shafts, bearings, seals, structures, etc.
  • Understanding of engineering materials and production methods relevant to them.
  • Experience of Electromechanical Design and Engineering using 3D CAD tools.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
  • Ability to communicate clearly, through written and verbal means, to all levels within the business and interact easily with other Engineering teams.
  • Ability to plan their work and that of those they supervise to meet agreed monthly milestones/tasks, with strong time management and prioritisation.
  • Self‑motivated and able to work on own initiative.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet project and program deadlines.

Desirable

  • Direct experience with high‑speed power generation and motor technologies.
  • Basic understanding of Mechatronics and Electronics.
  • Experience dealing directly with internal/external customers or stakeholders.
  • Experience working with Engineering service suppliers, e.g., defining Statements of Work and approving deliverables for outsourced staff.
