Operational Incident Manager (3586) – Rail Operations Centre (ROC Three Bridges)
GTR are recruiting an Operational Incident Manager based out of our Rail Operating Centre in Three Bridges.
This new position carries significant accountability as the key live decision-maker within Southern’s operational team. OIMs are part of a 7-strong team rostered 24/7 dedicated to both providing an immediate response to operational incidents that occur, directing the actions to be taken, and physically attending significant incidents on the GTR South’ network. This role carries a diverse range of responsibility where no two days are the same.
OIMs will have the discretion, personal decision-making confidence and training to influence the course of service recovery following incidents, and act as the first responder to drivers and other operational staff involved. OIMs will collect evidence from the scene, download train data loggers and liaise with partners in Network Rail and GTR to ensure a complete portfolio of information is passed to the owning investigatory managers.
Where necessary, OIMs will support NR in taking immediate actions to prevent further safety incidents. In addition, OIMs will proactively undertake monitoring audits of driver compliance with safe train driving by download and practical observation, to ensure we are proactively driving continuous safety improvement.
This position will be rostered on a 24 hour, 7 day per week basis with an 8 hour weekday and 12 hour weekend shift structure, designed to support a positive work/life balance and support our aim to increase the appeal of operational management roles to a diverse range of candidates.
This role is based at Three Bridges ROC in order to provide instantaneous support to the Control and Network Rail teams when the OIM is not responding to incidents or undertaking safety auditing activity in person on the Southern network. It is not suitable for remote working.
Key Success Criteria
- Prioritise service recovery following all operational incidents by ensuring consistent, evidence-based decisions are taken in line with GeForce TRAINING; in turn, increase the level of operational performance achieved by the business
- Deliver first-class standards of support with consideration for driver welfare following incidents and take fair and consistent decisions
- Become a network-wide ambassador for operational teams
- Ensure high quality information is consistently inputted to the Southern electronic management systems
- Identify non-compliance with southern driving standards through sampling activities and compile reports
- Maintain agreed competence levels using spaces provided in the roster and undertake other activities supporting teams as required by the Operational Response Manager
- Be immediately available to respond to operational incidents occurring on the GTR South area and provide authoritative decision making based on experience and objective analysis of the facts available and safety profile
- Provide informed, official guidance and instructions to Southern control teams on resolving operating incidents, proactively considering implications on safety and operational performance
- Take the lead in supporting Southern control teams with arranging response plans with Southern Resource Managers and local driver management teams
