Lead Design Engineer

Location: Bristol (Hybrid Working) | Salary: Negotiable | Type: Permanent

I’m currently supporting an engineering consultancy delivering work across a range of high-profile aerospace programmes and looking for an experienced Lead Design Engineer to join their growing team. This is a technical leadership position where you’ll take ownership of multiple engineering projects, guiding design activities from early concept stages through to manufacture, certification and in-service support. The role offers the opportunity to work across a diverse portfolio of aerospace programmes rather than being tied to a single product line, giving exposure to a broad range of technologies, customers and engineering challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development activities across complex aerospace projects.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineering teams.
  • Act as the primary technical interface for customers and stakeholders.
  • Manage engineering deliverables to programme cost, quality and schedule requirements.
  • Review and approve engineering designs, drawings, models and technical documentation.
  • Support design reviews, engineering governance and technical decision making.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary activities across design, stress, systems, manufacturing and certification teams.
  • Contribute to bids, proposals and future programme growth.

What We’re Looking For

  • Significant aerospace design engineering experience.
  • Previous experience leading engineers and technical work packages.
  • Strong understanding of the full engineering lifecycle.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as CATIA V5, Siemens NX, Creo or similar.
  • Knowledge of configuration control, engineering change processes and design governance.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Desirable Experience

  • Commercial or military aerospace programmes.
  • Airworthiness and certification knowledge.
  • Aerospace structures, systems integration or installation design experience.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.

What’s on Offer

  • Technical leadership role on major aerospace programmes.
  • Exposure to a variety of projects and technologies.
  • Hybrid working arrangements.
  • Strong career progression opportunities.
  • Collaborative engineering environment with genuine influence over project delivery.
