Nurse Team Leader with focus on Practice Education

Overview

A rare opportunity has arisen to join the dynamic Sexual Health and Contraception (SHAC) team in Brighton and Hove. SHAC is an integrated service operating across three sites in the city, with outreach teams providing care to the city’s most vulnerable and marginalised groups in non‑clinical settings. We are a progressive, multidisciplinary team providing comprehensive, patient‑focused services.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee training and professional development for nursing staff, ensuring delivery of expert care within the speciality.
  • Ensure delivery of best practice in contraception and sexual health care, maintaining recognised qualifications.
  • Safeguard patients and staff, upholding safeguarding policies and teaching qualifications.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, colleagues and multidisciplinary teams, both verbally and in writing.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with other disciplines and voluntary agencies to promote reproductive and sexual health.
  • Lead staff meetings, working parties and decision‑making processes.
  • Stay current with policies, news and events, fostering an open, no‑blame culture.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programmes and audit activities.
  • Develop referral pathways, workforce planning and manage change within the service.
  • Implement strategies aligned with national and local sexual health strategies and policies.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Registered Nurse (Level 1) with current NMC registration.
  • Post‑graduate experience in contraception, GUM, HIV or equivalent (Band 6).
  • Teaching and assessment qualification, preferably in nursing.
  • Experience running nurse‑only clinics and delivering education programmes.
  • Recognised knowledge of contraception and sexual health, ability to prescribe non‑medical prescriptions.
  • Adaptive to unpredictable workload changes and capable of managing caseloads autonomously.
  • BSc in Nursing (or equivalent); MSc or currently working toward an MSc desirable.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Competence in HPV ablative therapies (preferred).

  • Supervised junior staff and students, delivering training programmes.
  • Led educational initiatives and training sessions for staff and patients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Managed budgets, resources and staff allocation.

Other Requirements

  • Experience autonomously delivering care within policies and procedures, including non‑medical prescribing or using PGDs.
  • Knowledge of national and local sexual health initiatives and documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Adaptability to conflicting priorities.
  • Competence in managing HPV ablative therapies.

Eligibility

  • Applicants on a Graduate visa must have at least 18 months remaining at the time of application.
  • Visa sponsorship is available under the UKVI Skilled Worker route for eligible applicants. Sponsorship is only provided where the applicant meets UKVI criteria, including skill and salary thresholds.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check

Applicants will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check, fulfilling the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.

Benefits

Salary: £49,387 – £56,515 per annum (pro rata). This role also includes standard NHS benefits and a supportive development pathway.
