Consultant In Children and Young Peoples Emergency Medicine

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated Consultant in Children and Young People’s Emergency Medicine to join a friendly, dynamic and forward‑thinking Children’s Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. NUH is a Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands, with a dedicated Children’s and Young People’s Emergency Department based within Nottingham Children’s Hospital.

Job Overview & Main Responsibilities

Day to day you will contribute to the Children and Young People’s Emergency Department consultant clinical rota, providing senior clinical leadership on the shop floor and taking responsibility for assessment and management of acutely unwell and injured children and young people, including paediatric resuscitation and major trauma. You will demonstrate effective leadership across the multi‑professional team and play an active role in the education, supervision and development of doctors, advanced practitioners, nurses and other learners. You will contribute to clinical governance activity – audit, quality improvement, incident review and service development. All consultants must be GCP certified and support recruitment to research studies within the department.

Non‑shop‑floor duties are integral to the running of a busy Children’s Emergency Department. Opportunities include leadership and governance, education, research, service improvement and departmental development. Protected time is provided to develop specialist interests aligned to departmental strategy.

Professional Registration

  • Full GMC registration
  • Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register
  • CCT in Paediatric Emergency Medicine or CCT in Emergency Medicine with PEM sub‑specialty training or CCT in general paediatrics with substantial PEM experience

Qualifications / Development

  • MRCPCH, FRCEM or equivalent ATLS, APLS or equivalent
  • Evidence of Level 3 Safeguarding Children
  • Higher professional degree or qualification or training

Teaching, Education & Research

  • Evidence of participation in QIPs / Clinical Audit
  • Able to teach and support junior staff effectively
  • Higher degree or qualification in healthcare education
  • Higher degree or qualification in research methodology
  • Higher degree or qualification in quality improvement
  • Original research publications

Management Skills

  • Knowledge of attributes of effective leaders and high‑performing teams
  • Knowledge of the place of the ED in the wider NHS and the Urgent and Emergency Care Pathway
  • Ability to develop, present and operationalise ideas for service development/delivery
  • Experience of significant change‑management programmes
  • Ability to lead teams and delegate appropriately
  • Higher degree or other qualification in leadership and management

Clinical Skills & Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years post‑graduation experience
  • Able to communicate with children of all ages
  • Able to communicate empathically with children and their families
  • Effectively leads paediatric emergency medicine situations
  • Specific training or qualification in communication skills
  • Specific training or qualification in patient safety and/or human factors

Personal Skills and Qualities

  • Able to work flexibly in a changing health service
  • Able to use the Trust’s IT support systems
  • Works well under pressure, patient‑tactful, diplomatic
