As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first‑of‑a‑kind fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Section Engineer – Nights to contribute to our Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

Role Purpose: To lead and control the engineering delivery of a defined section of works, ensuring that construction is planned, set out, inspected, recorded and delivered safely, accurately and in line with programme, budget, quality requirements and project standards. The Section Engineer will lead and support Site Engineers, Assistant Engineers, supervisors and subcontractors within the allocated section. The role will provide the link between engineering control, construction delivery, quality, programme, commercial records and safe systems of work. The role requires good civil engineering judgement, strong site awareness and the ability to work across several construction disciplines without being limited to one specialist area.

What you’ll be doing

Engineering Control

  • Lead engineering control for the allocated section of works, ensuring works are set out, checked, inspected and recorded in line with drawings, specifications, permits and project requirements.
  • Provide guidance to Site Engineers and Assistant Engineers on setting out, survey control, technical checks, construction tolerances and record keeping.
  • Ensure survey control, setting out information, calibration records and as-built data are accurate and complete.
  • Identify clashes, missing information, level issues, tolerance risks and constructability concerns at an early stage.

Delivery and Support

  • Support safe and efficient delivery of civil engineering and construction works within the allocated section.
  • Coordinate day‑to‑day site activities with supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers and delivery teams.
  • Ensure drawings, RAMS, permits, temporary works, labour, plant, materials, access and inspections are in place prior to commencement.
  • Support delivery across enabling works, earthworks, drainage, underground services, roads, pavements, concrete works, structures, buildings, temporary works, logistics and general construction.
  • Resolve site issues where possible and escalates risks impacting safety, quality, programme, cost or handover.

Health, Safety, Environmental

  • Lead by example and support Balfour Beatty values, Zero Harm and project safety standards.
  • Review, contribute to and communicate RAMS, task briefings, permits and safe systems of work.
  • Ensure Permit to Dig, temporary works, lifting, access, traffic management and service avoidance controls are implemented where required.
  • Stop or escalare works where controls, information or site conditions are inadequate.
  • Support environmental controls covering silt, water, waste, concrete washout, fuel, dust, noise, spoil management and pollution prevention.

Quality, Testing and Records

  • Manage inspection and test plans, check sheets, hold points and testing requirements for the allocated section.
  • Maintain accurate quality records including photographs, red‑line drawings, as‑built information and handover documentation.
  • Raise, manage and close NCRs, defects and snags in accordance with project processes.
  • Ensure works meet drawings, specifications and quality requirements.
  • Promote right‑first‑time delivery and ensure records are produced progressively.

Commercial and Finance

  • Maintain accurate records of labour, plant, materials, subcontract resources, outputs, delays, instructions and site conditions, including weekly measures, take‑offs, material reconciliations and progress tracking.
  • Understand potential additional works and ensure robust factual records are maintained.
  • Provide timely information to support commercial teams with cost control, change management and recovery.
  • Monitor section performance against budget, programme and planned outputs.

Who we’re looking for

  • Previous experience in a Section Engineer role, Site Engineer role, or similar civil engineering delivery role.
  • Good understanding of civil engineering and / or construction and site delivery.
  • Ability to lead engineering control for a defined section of works.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications, permits, schedules and construction details.
  • Experience with setting out, survey control, technical checks and construction tolerances.
  • Understanding of RAMS, Permit to Dig, inspection and test plans, quality records and site documentation.
  • Ability to produce and manage records, progress updates, as‑built information and material reconciliations.
  • Ability to coordinate site teams, subcontractors and junior engineers.
  • Good communication skills and confidence raising issues where information or controls are not suitable.
  • Ability to manage own time and work across several site priorities.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and relevant project systems.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • SMSTS or willingness to obtain SMSTS where required.
  • Willingness to work weekends, nights or adjusted shifts where required.
