Consultant Ophthalmologist Paediatrics & Adult Strabismus

We are looking for a bright, enthusiastic Ophthalmologist to join our expanding Ophthalmology department. This individual should have sound general ophthalmic training and, additionally, sub‑specialist training in Paediatrics and Strabismus.

Job Responsibilities

• Full‑time consultant comprising 10 programmed activities (PAs), each with a nominal timetable of 4 hours.
• Participate in the ROP screening rota; training is available for both screening and treatment.
• Teach, train and develop the next generation of medical professionals, and be involved in a variety of research projects.
• Support the implementation of virtual clinics, high‑volume cataract surgery and the development of extended practice roles.
• Work within the brand‑new standalone REI Ophthalmic Unit at Derriford Hospital.

About Us

Our department is a teaching hospital led by consultants Miss L Dujardin and Miss E Gajdosova, with a multidisciplinary team that includes doctors, advanced clinical practitioners, optometrists, nurses and ophthalmic trainees from the Peninsula Deanery School of Ophthalmology. We are forward‑looking and embracing modern concepts in ophthalmic care.

Education and Professional Qualifications

• FRCOphth, MRCOphth or equivalent
• Full GMC registration
• Entry on GMC specialist register
• Higher research degree
• Postgraduate prizes and awards
• Other medical qualifications and experience outside specialty

Subspecialty Training and Experience

• Sub‑specialty training (fellowship level or equivalent) in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus
• Evidence of ability to perform advanced strabismus surgery
• Sub‑specialty interest within paediatric ophthalmology to complement existing consultants
• ROP treater experience
• Attended appropriate courses/meetings in the last 3 years relevant to the specialty

Research & Clinical Audit

• Understanding of research methodology and ethics
• Experience in audit at local level
• Interest in clinical research evidenced by publications and participation in research projects
• Presentations at local/ regional/ national/ international meetings
• Relevant audit projects
• Statistical knowledge

Teaching

• Evidence of enthusiasm and experience teaching undergraduates, postgraduates and other healthcare professionals
• Evidence of experience and ability in teaching
• Supervision of projects
• Training the trainers course or equivalent
• Qualification in medical education

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

• Ability to lead and work with a multidisciplinary team
• Ability to delegate appropriately
• Willingness to become part of the existing ophthalmology team
• Communication skills, particularly in dealing with other medical teams and parents
• Prepared to put patients’ interests above all others
• Good presentation skills
• Track record of leadership positions and evidence of success within those roles
