Job Description:

We are recruiting a Group Financial Accountant to join the leadership team of the Finance department. In this role you will be responsible for the control and preparation of the group’s annual financial statements, meeting the submission deadline, reviewing balance‑sheet control risk account reconciliations, and identifying all risks that need to be recorded on the appropriate risk register.

This role will take ownership of the planning, delivery, monitoring and review of the completion of the annual financial statements for the University Group, working with the relevant directors to complete subsidiary companies’ draft financial statements in readiness for approval by the Subsidiaries Company Board of Directors.

You will produce end‑of‑year audit files and all supporting documentation for review, working closely with the group external auditors and liaising with Finance colleagues to resolve audit queries and meet deadlines. You will oversee any post‑audit amendments of the group’s accounts ahead of formal sign‑off.

You will support the development of regular cash‑flow reporting and forecasts at company level, enabling effective cash management and, where possible, optimising investments of surplus funds.

You will be a qualified professional accountant (eg ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with at least an associate‑level membership; fellowship‑level membership would be advantageous. Your employment background will include substantial financial accounting experience, particularly statutory accounting. You will possess extensive working knowledge of financial accounting and statutory reporting, including experience in preparing statutory accounts and liaising with external auditors. You will demonstrate strong expertise in cash‑flow planning and reporting, as well as in the reconciliation and management of balance‑sheet control accounts. You will have familiarity with UK accounting principles or financial regulations relevant to Higher Education (e.g., SORP for Higher Education). Experience previously working in Financial Accounting within the HE sector would be advantageous. You will be ICT literate with excellent planning and organisational skills, and you will have an inquisitive nature that enables you to investigate problems and situations beyond routine questioning.
