Department: Emergency Medicine

Hours: Primarily Night Shifts / Out-of-Hours Rota

Contract Type: Locum contract

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

  • Assess, investigate, diagnose, and manage patients presenting to the Emergency Department overnight.
  • Deliver immediate treatment and stabilisation for critically ill or injured patients.
  • Prioritise patient care according to clinical urgency and departmental protocols.
  • Request and interpret relevant investigations including blood tests, ECGs, and imaging.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation using electronic patient record systems.
  • Escalate complex or deteriorating cases appropriately to senior clinicians.
  • Participate in patient handovers to ensure continuity of care between shifts.

Teamworking & Communication

  • Work collaboratively with consultants, specialty teams, nursing staff, paramedics, and allied health professionals.
  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients and relatives during emergency presentations.
  • Support junior colleagues and contribute positively to team morale during overnight operations.

Governance & Quality

  • Adhere to GMC standards, Trust policies, and national clinical guidelines.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and departmental governance activities where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, safeguarding, and patient safety procedures.

Training & Development

  • Engage in ongoing professional development and mandatory training.
  • Opportunities may be available for teaching, simulation training, and career progression within Emergency Medicine.

Person Specification

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise.
  • Minimum NHS clinical experience in Emergency Medicine, Acute Medicine, or related specialties.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced acute environment.
  • Strong communication and decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to work independently overnight with appropriate senior support.
  • ALS/ATLS/APLS certification.
  • Experience using NHS electronic patient record systems.
  • Interest in Emergency Medicine training or acute care pathways.

Working Pattern

  • Predominantly night shifts including weekends and bank holidays.
  • Rota compliant with EWTD and NHS contractual standards.
  • Flexible shift arrangements may be considered depending on service needs.
