We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Consultant with a Specialist Interest in Hepatobiliary Medicine to join our team of five Hepatology consultants and eight specialist nurses at the University of Derby and Burton Hospitals (UHDB). Our IQILS-accredited service is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, where patients have access to a dedicated Hepatology ward.
We are a Level 2 Liver Unit providing comprehensive care for all aspects of hepatobiliary disease, including day case paracentesis, liver biopsy, Fibroscan, ERCP, EUS and spyglass cholangioscopy. We are a tertiary referral centre for PTC and TIPSS, supported by four GI radiologists.
We hold weekly specialist hepatobiliary cancer MDT meetings with input from cancer surgeons at Nottingham, and provide specialist outreach clinics at both Derby and Burton. We provide specialist training to Specialty Registrars, including a new Derby-Birmingham Advanced Training Post in Hepatology, and dedicated endoscopy fellows.
We encourage applicants with experience of managing complex hepatobiliary medicine to apply. Provision of EUS and ERCP will form a core part of the post’s job plan.
This is a full‑time position; part‑time or job‑share applicants are welcome. If a part‑time or job‑share person is successful the job content will be discussed on a personal basis. Informal visits are welcomed.
Main duties of the job
- Work closely with 14 luminal gastroenterologists to provide a 24/7 gastroenterology and liver service, including a daily inpatient endoscopy list and out‑of‑hours GI bleed service.
- Provide clinical services to Derby, East Staffordshire and surrounding areas.
- Assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients at the hospitals and clinics at which you have duties.
- Provide continuing care and treatment of patients in your charge, and teach staff in training.
- Maintain flexible arrangements for emergency cover and support colleagues during leave.
- Provide an out‑of‑hours service with on‑call rota commitments.
- Actively participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education, including training sessions for resident doctors, medical students and other healthcare staff.
- Supervise and train medical staff/students, carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required, and contribute to postgraduate and CPD activity locally and nationally.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- MRCP.
- MBBS or equivalent.
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register for Gastroenterology within 6 months of receipt of CCT at interview, or application for full GMC registration with CESR/Portfolio pathway during interview.
- Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
- Additional higher medical or scientific degree relevant to the specialty.
- Training qualification.
Clinical experience
- Sub‑specialty learning in Hepatobiliary Medicine.
- Full JAG certification in EUS and ERCP.
- Evidence of independent clinical practice.
- Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk.
- Sub‑specialty accreditation in Hepatology (CCT) or completion of Hepatology ATP post.
- One year NHS experience.
Management and administrative experience
- Commitment to continuing professional development and clinical governance.
- Attended a management or leadership course for consultants.
Teaching, audit and research experience
- Evidence of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students.
- Experience supervising F1, F2, ST trainees.
- Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or quality improvement projects.
- Evidence of academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty.
- Specific teaching qualification.
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under‑graduates.
- Experience of teaching endoscopy.
- Attended a recognised teaching training course.
Audit/Research Experience
- Experience and commitment to clinical audit.
- Evidence of completion or working towards a higher degree.
Communication
- Experience of formal presentations.
- Ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administration duties.
