Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Bereavement Officer to join the Bereavement Team based at Queens Hospital Burton with regular cross‑site working between there and The Royal Derby Hospital.
The role supports the Senior Bereavement Officer, covering absence periods and facilitating the smooth and efficient running of the Bereavement office. It requires excellent communication, organisational and IT skills, providing a sensitive and compassionate service to bereaved relatives in emotionally challenging situations.
Main duties of the job
- Provide a professional, compassionate and high‑quality service to relatives of deceased patients in line with national legislation and Trust policies.
- Undertake administrative duties associated with the completion of medical death certificates in liaison with stakeholders.
- Run the Eye Donation Service, including making the initial approach to bereaved families of potential donors.
- Ensure doctors complete legal documentation promptly and accurately, and provide advice, support and information to facilitate this.
- Establish and maintain partnership working with the Registrar Service, Coroner’s office, funeral directors, chaplaincy, mortuary staff, clinical and non‑clinical staff.
- Work at Queens Hospital Burton and the Royal Derby Hospital office on a regular basis, including weekend and bank holiday cover on a rota basis as required.

Person specification
Education, Training and Qualifications
- Business Administration qualification or equivalent experience.
- Advanced level of IT literacy with experience of using a range of IT applications.
Experience & Knowledge
- Experience of working within a team.
- Experience of working in a healthcare setting.

- Excellent organisational skills due to fast‑pace and frequently changing priorities in the department.
- Ability to concentrate with multiple interruptions and changing tasks.
