We have an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our healthcare team at Derwentside IRC. Derwentside IRC is an Immigration Removal Centre based in Consett, County Durham, supporting up to 80 women aged 18+ with primary care, mental health and substance misuse services. In this role you will join an established, experienced mental health team that runs a nurse‑led service focused on a medical model diagnosis for complex health needs. The psychiatrist caseload will be 4–5 patients per day.

About the Role

Consultant Psychiatrist responsible for clinical oversight, treatment and supervision within the forensic setting. Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff, provide risk assessment, develop treatment plans and contribute to service strategy.

Hours

  • AM session: 08:00 – 12:00
  • PM session: 13:00 – 17:00
  • 4 hours per week (either a Tuesday or Thursday) or 8 hours per fortnight (full day or two separate 4‑hour sessions)

Salary

Annual salary up to £191,000 per annum FTE, depending on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide excellent clinical care, assessment and treatment to patients on the caseload onsite
  • Actively participate in the strategic direction of the mental health service, lead senior mental health clinicians on service developments and provide clinical supervision
  • Work within the multidisciplinary team to review referrals, determine appropriate treatment plans, conduct risk assessments and engage in complex case reviews

Requirements

  • Registered professional with current registration (GMC)
  • Specialist registration in either General Adult or Forensic Psychiatry
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the MHS 1983
  • Understanding of the complexities of multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency working
  • Up‑to‑date knowledge in adult psychiatry and personality disorder (PD)
  • Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision, policy and legislation
