How you’ll make a difference

Vinney Green Secure Childrens Home provides a safe, nurturing environment where young people can benefit6 from high-quality care, education and opportunities to develop vocational and essential life skills.

As a Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Instructor, you will work closely with our Education team to create, source and deliver engaging lessons. You will support young people in navigating their current circumstances while equipping them with the knowledge, confidence and skills needed for a positive future beyond Vinney Green.

What you will be doing

  • It will be your responsibility to design and implement an engaging, relevant subject curriculum, including schemes of work, alongside delivering lessons for up to 24 children and young people, in groups of 2-4.
  • You will assess, monitor and record the progress and achievements of assigned pupils, reporting information back to the Head or Deputy Head of Education.
  • It will be key for you to ensure that pupils work is marked and up-to-date with clear feedback provided to support their progress.
  • By building positive and effective relationships with our children and young people, many of whom have experienced complex trauma, you will play a key role in supporting the development of their social skills, confidence and self-esteem.

  • You will be responsible for maintaining accurate documentation, including behaviour management records and daily logs for each young person.

What we need from you

  • It is essential that you hold a GCSE in English and maths (grade 4 or above) or hold an equivalent qualification relevant to working with children and young people.
  • You must have considerable experience of working with children or young people in an educational setting.
  • Given the nature of the role, you must have good interpersonal skills when working with both adults and young people, for example, the ability to effectively de-escalate conflict between young people or communicating concerns to relevant managers.
  • Although not essential, you may have a teaching and/or training qualification or have teaching, coaching or training experience with young people aged 11-18.
  • It would be beneficial to have experience in a specialist setting, for example SEND provision in a mainstream school, a special school or specialist unit, particularly with pupils who present with SEMH needs.

What you need to know

  • This is for a limited term contract due to end 31st August 2027,
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
  • The salary is plus a secure unit allowance of 2,903.04 per annum, pro rated to hours worked and enhancements for Sunday and Bank Holiday working.
  • Young people can present physically threatening behaviour and the environment can become tense and anxiety provoking, so for everybodys safety surveillance cameras are in use in most areas of the building.
  • Vinney Green operates a full non-smoking environment, and there is no provision to facilitate smoking anywhere on site. Staffs personal belongings are required to be left in a provided locker on entry into the building and we may require you to undertake a further physical fitness check.
  • This role is demanding and there will be some physical active aspects to the job, but we can assure you that this will be one of the most rewarding jobs that you will ever do!
