Senior Building Technician

Full-Time | On-Site

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Senior Building Technician to support the operation and maintenance of a busy scientific estate. Reporting to the Building Manager, you will play a key role in ensuring research, teaching, and support facilities operate safely, efficiently, and effectively.

This varied, hands-on role combines building maintenance, laboratory support, contractor management, and technical problem-solving across multiple buildings within a scientific environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair laboratory and research equipment.
  • Support laboratory refurbishment and construction projects, including contractor supervision.
  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance to building fabric, infrastructure, and laboratory services.
  • Install and maintain systems including compressed air, gas, water, extraction, and vacuum services.
  • Manage stocks of liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and gases.
  • Support building security, fire alarm systems, and emergency response activities.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, environmental, and statutory requirements.
  • Maintain maintenance records, inventories, and procurement activities.
  • Work closely with academics, technical staff, contractors, and facilities teams to support operational delivery.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • City & Guilds, HNC, HND, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent technical qualification.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical, or electrical equipment.
  • Strong practical maintenance skills and experience using engineering hand tools.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation and building regulations.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, Building Management Systems (BMS), and PAT testing software.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with compressed air, vacuum, gas, water, or cryogenic systems.
  • Vacuum and rotary pump maintenance experience.
  • Contractor supervision experience.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Advanced maintenance and repair skills.
