£34,000 – £38,000 + Benefits

Monday to Friday

Rotating shifts: Monday to Friday 08:00–17:00 and 11:00–20:00

We are recruiting for a Site Chemist to join a busy Hazardous Waste Transfer Station in Grays, Essex. This is a varied and hands-on role within the Technical team, combining laboratory, operational and customer-facing responsibilities.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient management of hazardous waste, with duties both on site and occasionally at customer locations.

The Role

As a Site Chemist, your responsibilities will include:

Inspecting incoming waste loads and ensuring compliance with transport documentation.

Classifying hazardous and dangerous substances.

Using XRF laboratory equipment.

Providing disposal quotations for new waste enquiries.

Segregating chemicals into compatible groups and ensuring correct packaging and labelling for onward transport.

Sampling, checking and testing waste materials.

Assigning EWC codes and ADR classifications where required.

Preparing paperwork and documentation for outgoing loads.

Supervising the loading of hazardous materials.

Assisting with waste stock control and maintaining accurate records.

Supporting customers with emergency call-outs when required.

Assisting with Yard Manager duties during periods of absence or increased workload.

Supporting commercial activities including pricing incoming waste streams.

Carrying out occasional work at customer sites, including waste listing, packing and collection activities.

About You

We are looking for someone who can work effectively in a fast-paced environment and who has a strong awareness of health, safety and environmental compliance.

You should ideally have:

Previous experience within hazardous waste, chemicals or waste management.

Knowledge of waste classification, EWC codes and ADR regulations.

Experience handling hazardous materials.

Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

The ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

A proactive approach and a willingness to support wider site operations.

A commitment to maintaining high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.
