Role: Design Manager

Overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Design Manager to join a leading Tier 1 construction contractor delivering major public sector projects within the Southern Home Counties region
As this role supports Ministry of Justice projects, applicants must be willing and eligible to obtain Security Clearance (SC). Candidates who are unable to meet the SC clearance requirements will not be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish, maintain and manage effective design resources and team structures throughout both bid and delivery stages.
- Lead and deliver a professional, comprehensive and sustainable design management service for clients, consultants and key supply chain partners.
- Manage and coordinate the design process through all RIBA design stages, challenging briefs where appropriate and introducing innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with all design management procedures throughout project lifecycle stages.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of project design strategies.
- Review and manage adherence to design briefs and scopes of service, ensuring clear deliverables at each project stage.
- Coordinate design team activities, specialist contractors and statutory authorities to achieve programme milestones.
- Ensure designs comply with current legislation, regulations, standards and industry best practice.
- Maintain alignment between design development, client requirements and project budgets.
- Manage change control processes, ensuring design changes are properly reviewed, authorised and implemented in collaboration with project teams and clients.
- Support effective communication and coordination between all project stakeholders throughout the design process.
Candidate Requirements
- Proven experience working as a Design Manager within a main contracting environment.
- Previous experience delivering Ministry of Justice, custodial or secure environment projects is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of modern construction techniques and design management processes.
- Experience working with 3D modelling platforms and COBie data.
- Relevant construction qualification (BSc, HNC or HND).
- Professional membership with a relevant industry body such as CIOB is desirable.
- Excellent leadership, coordination and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple design disciplines and deliver projects within programme and budget constraints.
- Strong knowledge of current building regulations, compliance requirements and construction legislation.
