The Opportunity

An established aerospace and defence organisation is looking for an experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer to join its Operations Engineering team in Bedfordshire.

This position offers the opportunity to support technically complex products throughout their full lifecycle, from initial design and prototype build through to production, continuous improvement and end-of-life support.

You will act as a key engineering point of contact for manufacturing activities, helping to improve product quality, manufacturing efficiency, production yield and overall cost performance.

The organisation offers an excellent work-life balance, including a four-day working week from Monday to Thursday and flexible working arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and improve manufacturing processes for complex mechanical assemblies and machined components.
  • Support products throughout the full lifecycle, including prototype build, new product introduction and full-rate production.
  • Define manufacturing sequences, operating procedures and production layouts.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles to improve product flow, efficiency and quality.
  • Create detailed manufacturing process instructions and supporting technical documentation.
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing Bills of Materials, routings and production data.
  • Identify tooling, jig and fixture requirements.
  • Produce technical requirement specifications for new manufacturing equipment, tooling and processes.
  • Provide engineering estimates for manufacturing and shop-floor activities.
  • Support manufacturing problem-solving, root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Drive right-first-time quality and reduce waste, rework and manufacturing costs.
  • Support capital equipment projects from initial definition through to installation and acceptance.
  • Contribute to manufacturing technology roadmaps and future process improvements.
  • Participate in cross-functional production and continuous improvement meetings.
  • Work closely with Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Design, Quality and Operations teams.
  • Support business process reviews and the creation or revision of relevant manufacturing documentation.
  • Promote cultural and process change across the manufacturing environment.

Skills and Experience Required

  • Strong manufacturing engineering experience within aerospace, defence, automotive, precision engineering or another highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Good working knowledge of complex mechanical assemblies and machining processes.
  • Proven experience supporting new product introduction.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma and quality improvement methodologies.
  • Experience creating manufacturing instructions, process documentation and technical specifications.
  • Experience managing manufacturing BOMs and routings within SAP or a similar MRP/ERP system.
  • Experience using CAD software to produce or amend 2D technical drawings.
  • Ability to identify and define tooling, fixturing and manufacturing equipment requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving and continuous improvement capabilities.
  • Proven ability to improve manufacturing efficiency, product quality and production yield.
  • Experience supporting facility or production layout improvements would be advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across engineering and operational teams.

Security Requirements

Due to the nature of the aerospace and defence programmes involved, candidates must be eligible to obtain UK security clearance.

The successful applicant will require SC clearance to begin the role and must be eligible to progress to DV clearance.
