Solution Architect – Energy & Operational Technology
Location: Wokingham 5x a week

The Role
We are seeking an experienced Solution Architect to join a leading organisation within the energy sector. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in designing and delivering enterprise-scale solutions that support critical operational technology and power systems.
Working closely with business stakeholders, you will translate business requirements into robust, scalable solution designs while contributing to architecture standards, governance, and best practices across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with business stakeholders to understand requirements and develop solution-level architectures.
- Design secure, scalable, and resilient technology solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of architecture frameworks, standards, patterns, and governance.
- Provide architectural leadership across Operational Technology (OT) and Enterprise IT environments.
- Ensure solutions align with security, compliance, and operational requirements.
- Collaborate with technical teams to support successful solution delivery and implementation.
Essential Experience
- Significant experience working as a Solution Architect within large, complex organisations.
- Proven experience applying enterprise architecture standards and design patterns.
- Strong background within the Energy or Utilities sector.
- Experience working with Electricity System Operators, such as ESO, DNOs, or TOs.
- Experience with SCADA, EMS, ADMS, and IT/OT integration within electrical utilities.
- Knowledge of power systems applications and operational technology environments.
Technical Skills
We’re looking for candidates with expertise in several of the following areas:
Operational Technology
- Strong knowledge of Industrial Control Systems (ICS) and SCADA technologies.
- Experience integrating OT environments with enterprise IT systems.
- Understanding of data historians such as eDNA.
Industry Protocols
- Knowledge of:
- IEC 101
- IEC 104
- IEC 870.5
- ICCP / TASE.2
- Understanding of the OSI networking model, data transmission, and communications.
Cyber Security
- Experience implementing OT cybersecurity controls including:
- Network segmentation
- Firewalls
- Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS)
Infrastructure & Platforms
- TOGAF or equivalent architecture framework knowledge.
- Strong networking knowledge including:
- TCP/IP
- DNS
- BGP
- VPNs
- Firewalls
- Experience with on-premise infrastructure including:
- VMware ESXi
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
- Bare-metal Red Hat deployments
Cloud & Modern Architecture
- Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure and cloud networking services.
- Experience designing microservices architectures.
- Kubernetes administration and deployment experience.
- Rancher experience is advantageous.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and GitOps methodologies.
Monitoring & Emerging Technologies
- Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as:
- Prometheus
- Grafana
- Syslog
- Awareness of emerging technologies including:
- IoT
- AI
- Edge Computing
- Knowledge or experience with Powertech DSA Tools is highly desirable.
