Programme Leader

Purpose of the role

The Programme Leader plays a key role in the management, organisation and delivery structure of ESL. Working with the Academic Manager and Module Leaders, you will be responsible for the delivery and development of a particular Programme and the quality of the academic experience for students on that Programme.

Main responsibilities

Programme Leadership

  • Ensure that the whole team is fully aware of the programme and module specifications and their requirements
  • Ensure that the programme delivery team is fully aware of external reference points in relation to standards of teaching and assessment
  • Ensure that the programme delivery team is aware of relevant OfS B conditions and that the programme content, teaching and assessment meet and exceed the established thresholds
  • Prepare and present relevant programme monitoring reports internally to Boards and/or Committees and externally to partners as required
  • Ensure that any changes to the programme are made through the prescribed programme monitoring procedures
  • Establish and implement clear academic and assessment calendars for students
  • Ensure that clear operational calendars are in place to deliver the programme in accordance with the final specification documents
  • Ensure that all assessment at programme level is carried out within the agreed timescales
  • Proactively coordinate the effective delivery of the programme, providing leadership to the team of staff involved in teaching and support of the programme
  • Ensure that all aspects of the programme comply with the relevant Academic Regulations, policies and procedures of ESL and the external academic partner
  • Provide effective communication, guidance and support to all staff involved in the delivery of the programme
  • Participate in the recruitment of staff for the programme

General Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all relevant information is available for internal and external examiners
  • In collaboration with staff involved in delivery, organise workshops and other extra-curricular activities, especially regarding employability
  • Coordinate and participate in student induction processes, liaising with relevant colleagues to ensure successful delivery
  • In collaboration with Student Support and Quality and Governance, ensure Student Representatives are selected, trained and supported in their role
  • Support the overall guidance of students through the programme, responding to student queries relevant to the programme where these have not been satisfactorily resolved elsewhere
  • In collaboration with the Quality and Governance Team and the Student Support Team, attend and contribute to the Student Voice Panels and ensure that any relevant actions are completed
  • Receive comments from the partner and external examiners and ensure that recommendations are implemented where appropriate
  • Key Performance Measures

    • Monitor and periodically report on student outcomes for the Module Level, Year Level and Programme Level
    • Monitor and periodically report on fairness and transparency of assessments to maintain sector standards
    • Monitor and report on performance by all student characteristics for the Programme
    • Work with Registry to ensure that attendance on all modules is monitored and managed effectively
    • Ensure that students are aware of the NSS questionnaires and that a representative proportion of students respond to the mid-module and end-of-semester surveys
    • Ensure that teaching, assessment, feedback and learning resources for the Programme are up to date and continually improved
    • Monitor and report on student perceptions of teaching, assessment, feedback and learning resources
    • Ensure that retention, completion and progression rates exceed the percentage thresholds set by the OfS
    • Organise review of academic performance meetings for students at risk of withdrawal

    Qualifications and Experience

    Needed Essential:

    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.
    • Native English speaker or certified to the equivalent level.

    Desirable:

    • Postgraduate degree from an accredited university.
    • Experience of administrative work at a higher-education institution in the UK.
