Senior Substation Engineer

Base Location: Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen & Inverness.

Salary: £58,100 – £87,100 + car allowance + performance‑related bonus + a range of benefits.

Working Pattern: Permanent | Full Time | Flexible (First options available).

Role Overview

We are looking for a Senior Substation Engineer to join the Offshore AC Project Engineering team within SSEN Transmissions. The role supports Island projects that connect to HVDC systems and deliver a low‑carbon power network.

Key Responsibilities

• Review and approve primary substation designs (33kV to 400kV) through development, execution, and documentation, including Single Line Diagrams, Stage by Stage Diagrams, Electrical layouts and Scope of Work.
• Promote best practice within Substation design and suggest improvements to specifications, technology options and risk management.
• Drive decision making and provide peer review of key technical issues for other projects.
• Support and direct Project Engineers, leveraging technical expertise to aid Engineering Managers and advise on recruitment, training and development of the Substation Engineering Team.
• Advise on performance of external Engineering Consultants and Contractors involved in the supply chain.

Qualifications & Experience

• Demonstrable experience managing design development for Transmission or complex multi‑disciplinary engineering projects.
• Strong technical understanding of relevant legislation, technical standards and their implications on design and the Transmission network, including CDM.
• Excellent communication skills to convey complex technical issues clearly to senior management.
• Capacity to build effective working relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; Chartered Engineer status is desirable or working towards chartered status.
