Are you experienced in designing cable systems for complex grid connection and BESS projects?

Turner Lovell is recruiting a Principal Cable Systems Design Engineer for a leading UK energy infrastructure contractor delivering renewable energy and grid connection projects across the UK.

This role sits within the engineering design team and focuses on the end-to-end design of 11kV -132kV cable systems. You will play a key role in ensuring cable designs are technically compliant, constructable, and aligned with client, industry, and regulatory standards.. The position also offers a clear pathway into a Team Lead role within the next one to two years.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the delivery of 11kV-132kV cable system designs across BESS, grid connection, and renewable energy projects.
  • Review cable designs and provide technical guidance to ensure they meet client requirements and industry standards.
  • Design cable routes and layouts between substations, transformers, switchrooms, and BESS installations.
  • Carry out and review engineering studies, including cable ratings, induced voltages, cable pulling calculations, and cable force calculations.
  • Support projects from feasibility and detailed design through to construction and commissioning.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and help review their work where needed.
  • Liaise with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal design teams to resolve technical queries and keep projects moving.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • Proven experience delivering 11kV–132kV cable system designs for grid connection, BESS, substation, or renewable energy projects.
  • Strong understanding of underground cable systems, installation methods, and cable engineering calculations.
  • Experience using cable modelling software such as CYMCAP, Cableizer, ELEK, or similar.
  • Competent in AutoCAD and comfortable using Microsoft Office and engineering calculation tools.
  • Experience reviewing technical designs and supporting or mentoring other engineers would be advantageous.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing engineering team with a strong pipeline of projects, where you’ll play a key technical role and have the opportunity to step into a Team Lead position as the team expands.
