Project and Design Engineer

Company: Clark Door Limited
Apply for the Project and Design Engineer
Location: Carlisle
Job Description:

Clark Door designs, manufactures and installs specialist door systems for some of the most prestigious organisations in the world.

From acoustic and fire-rated doors to high-security, temperature-controlled and nuclear applications, our products protect people, assets and operations in some of the most complex environments on the planet.

With over 150 years of engineering heritage and recent recognition through the King’s Award for Innovation, we are continuing to grow by solving difficult technical challenges better than anyone else.

We are now looking for a Project and Design Engineer to join our Engineering team in Carlisle.

This is an opportunity to work on highly bespoke, technically challenging projects where your designs directly shape what is manufactured, installed and delivered to customers across the UK and overseas.

The role

As a Project and Design Engineer, you will take ownership of customer projects from order through to installation.

You will turn customer requirements, specifications and site constraints into engineered door solutions that can be manufactured, installed and signed off first time.

This is not a repetitive design role. No two projects are exactly the same. You will work across a wide range of specialist applications, supporting projects in sectors such as acoustic, fire, high-security, temperature-controlled and nuclear environments.

You will work closely with customers, architects, estimators, production teams, installation teams and other engineers to ensure each project meets its technical, commercial and quality requirements.

What you will do

  • Review customer specifications, drawings and contract documents
  • Identify technical issues, scope gaps and project risks early
  • Carry out or support site surveys where required
  • Produce General Arrangement drawings for customer approval
  • Produce fabrication, manufacturing and machining drawings
  • Ensure designs are practical, buildable and aligned with contract requirements
  • Work closely with production teams to support manufacture
  • Provide technical support to installation teams
  • Resolve customer, design and site-related queries
  • Inspect completed doors against specification where required
  • Support continuous improvement and product development activity
  • Take ownership of your own projects, deadlines and customer communication

What we are looking for

We are looking for someone with a strong engineering mindset, good attention to detail and the ability to manage technical projects from start to finish.

You will ideally have:

  • An HNC, HND or similar qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Or equivalent experience in an engineering, manufacturing or design role
  • Experience producing and interpreting engineering drawings
  • Experience designing products for manufacture, installation and real-world application
  • Strong AutoCAD 2D skills
  • Experience with 3D CAD such as Inventor or SolidWorks would be an advantage
  • A practical understanding of manufacturing, fabrication or machining processes
  • A highly organised and detail-focused approach
  • Confidence managing multiple projects and deadlines
  • Good communication skills with customers, engineers and production teams
  • A willingness to travel occasionally to UK and overseas sites, depending on project requirements

Experience in bespoke manufacturing, engineered-to-order products, construction products, doors, steel fabrication, specialist enclosures or regulated sectors would be beneficial, but not essential.

Why join Clark Door?

At Clark Door, you will be part of a business with a strong engineering heritage, ambitious plans for growth and a reputation for delivering specialist products into demanding environments.

You will have the opportunity to work on complex, interesting projects where your input genuinely matters.

You will see your designs move from concept, through manufacture, into installation and final customer sign-off.

We support people who want to develop, take ownership and build a long-term career with us.

What we offer

  • Salary up to £42,500 per year, depending on experience
  • 33 days annual leave, inclusive of bank holidays
  • Birthday off, in addition to your annual leave
  • Career development, including structured training, development pathways and progression opportunities
  • Loyalty reward scheme, with additional annual leave after 3 and 5 years’ continuous service
  • Life assurance at 4x your basic salary
  • Company pension contributions
  • Holiday purchase scheme, giving you added flexibility
  • Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
  • Company-funded sick pay
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Employee discounts and wellbeing benefits
  • Employee referral scheme with bonus opportunities

About you

You may already be working as a Design Engineer, Project Engineer, Mechanical Design Engineer, CAD Engineer, Production Engineer or Technical Engineer.

You might be looking for a role where you can move beyond drawing production and take more ownership of the full project lifecycle.

If you enjoy solving technical problems, working closely with customers and seeing your designs become real manufactured products, this could be a great next step.
