Senior Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist / Clinical Psychologist
Location: HMR PIMHS Town Rochdale – Site HMR PIMHS Town Rochdale. Band 8a. Contract: Permanent part‑time – 23.25 hours per week. Salary: £57,528 – £64,750 per annum (pro rata). Closing date: 13/07/2026. Interview date: 28/07/2026.
Overview
This role is part of an established Parent Infant Mental Health Service. You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, develop inclusive practice, and contribute to the growth of the service across the community and hospital settings. The position involves providing a comprehensive, formulation‑driven service for families from conception to age 2, training and supervising the workforce, and contributing to research and improvement initiatives.
Main Duties
- Deliver clinical psychology and psychotherapy services for infants 0–2 years within a multi‑agency context.
- Provide specialist psychological assessment for under‑two patients with severe or complex mental health difficulties and make evidence‑based treatment decisions.
- Formulate and implement therapeutic intervention plans from referral, including management of the caseload.
- Develop specialist provision for parents of infants and young children using established under‑two models of practice.
- Offer psychological expertise and consultation to other members of the PIMH service and within the wider network; hold and manage an independent caseload.
- Actively participate in PIMH weekly presentations, referrals, CPD and business meetings.
- Attend multidisciplinary and multi‑agency meetings, ensuring liaison with external professionals.
- Participate in audits and evaluation of clinical work and overall service quality.
- Contribute to the development of best evidence‑based practice within the service.
- Exercise autonomous professional responsibility in accordance with the HCPC Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct.
- Support service development and work closely with the multidisciplinary team, communicating effectively about patients’ progress.
- Assist in the management of the PIMH caseload as required.
- Produce timely, comprehensive reports on families that accurately convey assessment, formulation, and treatment outcomes while respecting confidentiality.

Person Specification
Education
- Doctorate level training in clinical psychology accredited by the BPS or a BPS Statement of Equivalence, with eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychology Status and HCPC registration.
- OR a Doctorate level qualification as a Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist recognised by the Association of Child Psychotherapists and full membership of the association.
- Parent–Infant Psychotherapy Training.
- Additional training in evidence‑based parent‑infant interventions.
Experience
- Experience working with highly complex patient groups, including infants, young children and families.
- Experience in psychotherapy, psychological assessment and therapeutic work with infants, young children and their families/parents/carers across a range of presenting problems.
- Experience consulting with professionals in health, education, social services and local authority.
- Experience representing child clinical psychology within multidisciplinary and multi‑agency treatment and care settings.
- Experience working in CAMHS and/or with infants and young children prior to training as a clinical psychologist.
- Experience in audit and research activities.
- Knowledge of developmental issues affecting infants under two.
- Experience working or contacting adult mental health services.
Knowledge
- Awareness of parental mental health in relation to infant/child mental health matters and experience of clinical supervision.
- Knowledge of legislation and national guidance relevant to the needs of infants and young children.
- Doctoral level or equivalent knowledge of child and adolescent clinical psychology, including theories and models of development, psychopathology, family and institutional dynamics.
- Working knowledge of professional systems involving infant and young child work, particularly statutory child protection frameworks.
- Evidence of clinical supervision.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in psychoanalytic methods of assessment, intervention and management with infants, young children and families.
- Skill in collaborative work, liaison and consultation with others, especially with complex families.
- Capacity to work flexibly and collaboratively within a multi‑disciplinary team.
- High level of risk assessment capability in parent‑infant mental health and with young children.
- Ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Sensitivity to disadvantaged groups.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of conveying complex clinical information to a broad audience.
- Resilience in stressful interpersonal situations, maintaining professionalism in difficult contexts.
- Organisational competence.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development as required by the HCPC.
