Job overview
The post holder will work as a co‑ordinator in the Major Trauma Ward to provide an effective, safe environment of care for individual patients, their relatives and carers.
The role acts as a visible role model and designated deputy to the Unit Managers.
Key responsibilities include initiating and supervising specific projects/audits related to professional development of nursing, monitoring standards of care, and acting as an agent for change to achieve a flexible and responsive culture. The post holder also plays a key role in delivering the unit’s privacy and dignity agenda.
Main duties of the job
The Major Trauma Ward is a 22‑bed mixed‑sex ward that caters to a range of complex injuries, providing opportunities for high‑dependency nursing skills. Patients span a wide age range, offering experience in basic nursing care, rehabilitation, and complex discharge planning.
The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, caring nurse with recent acute experience in trauma and a keen interest in providing excellent standard of care.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provides effective, safe, evidence‑based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct.
- Practices within the NMC Code of Conduct and promotes and monitors this practice on the ward.
- Takes the lead role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualised evidence‑based patient care, including monitoring care standards through audit and other activities.
- Participates in the development and implementation of an explicit ward philosophy of care.
- Is responsible for the process of attendances, admissions & transfers, and plans discharges in accordance with UHSussex policy and standards, including liaison with partner agencies.
- Actively participates and monitors the promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues, ensuring these needs are met within available resources.
- Ensures provision of all drugs as prescribed in accordance with UHSussex policy.

Experience / Qualifications
- Registered Nurse – UK NMC PIN required.
- Mentorship training or Practice Assessor training at Level 3 or equivalent, or working towards.
- Shift‑leading experience on an acute ward.
- B5 experience on a major trauma ward.
- Sign‑off mentor qualification.
- Completion of the acutely ill adult module.
- TCAR qualification.
