Overview

We are seeking enthusiastic and visionary Consultants in Geriatric Medicine to shape and grow our evolving older person services at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 07 July 2026.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead a team of resident doctors and multidisciplinary staff in delivering high-quality care to inpatients, outpatients, and emergency admissions. They will work collaboratively within a dynamic multidisciplinary team, playing a key role in achieving national and local clinical and quality targets in partnership with commissioners and clinical colleagues.

Additional on‑call commitment (optional)

The post may include participation in a 1:16 on‑call rota, comprising:

  • Evening post‑take ward rounds on the unselected medical take
  • Weekend on‑call duties as first and second on‑call, covering the unselected take and medical inpatients, currently structured as one long day and one short day per weekend
  • Overnight telephone advice with return to site if clinically required

Participation in the on‑call rota is remunerated with additional Programmed Activities (PAs) per week.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Internal Medicine or Geriatric Medicine, or be within six months of achieving this at the time of application.
  • Training and employment dates clearly listed on CV or application form.

Person Specification

  • Research & Teaching skills:
    • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
    • Awareness of current acute medical initiatives and developments.
    • Recent relevant clinical teaching experience within medical and allied disciplines.
    • Participation in research.
    • Publications in relevant peer reviewed journals.
    • Formal training in clinical supervision of junior doctors.
    • Other educational formal qualification.
    • Experience in organising educational activities.
    • Formal training in educational supervision of junior doctors.
  • Professional qualification:
    • MBBS or equivalent.
    • Licence to practice and full registration with GMC.
    • MRCP or equivalent.
    • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview.
    • Advanced Life Support.
    • Eligible to work in the UK.
  • Clinical skills & ability:
    • Evidence of achievement of GMC competency standards of Good Medical Practice, including delivery of good acute clinical care and maintaining good medical practice.
    • Good working relationships with colleagues, evidence of team working and multidisciplinary working in patient delivery.
    • Good relationships and communication with staff.
    • Good teaching and training skills.
    • Professional behaviour and probity.
    • Ability to work adaptively and manage different clinical areas as part of the on‑call team under consultant supervision.
    • Highly motivated approach.
  • Clinical experience & knowledge:
    • At least 6 months prior UK experience at middle grade/registrar level in one or more medical specialties.
    • Knowledge and experience of NHS.
    • Evidence of safe, sound clinical practices.
    • Demonstrate participation in audit and research.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of service improvement.
  • Other specific requirements:
    • Ability to understand local and national political agendas and respond accordingly.
    • Ability to perform effectively and maturely in management roles for the benefit of the service.
    • Ability to plan strategically and demonstrate sound judgement.
    • Ability to lead, motivate and develop the multidisciplinary team.

    • Evidence of experience and active engagement in clinical audit.

Salary: £113,565 to £150,569 per annum pro rata.
