General Manager, UHL/Theatres and Planned Care Surgery (external)

We are seeking a dynamic, motivated and experienced operational manager to lead Planned Care. Candidates will be educated to Masters level and will have significant NHS leadership experience with a proven track record of service development and delivering change in a complex system.

Candidates will have highly developed communication skills and will lead, in conjunction with the Clinical Directors and Lead Nurse, a multidisciplinary team.

Additional key responsibilities include accountable operational and performance targets, financial management and ensuring a robust quality and safety system.

Responsibilities

  • Effective strategic and operational management of Planned Care, ensuring delivery of high‑quality patient services within available resources.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the Directorate, taking the lead in developing the strategy for the services in line with the Clinical Board and UHB priorities.
  • Lead the coordination of the business planning process and oversee progress throughout the year.
  • Support the clinical team in developing investment business cases and implementing agreed capital projects.
  • Ensure a robust quality and safety system is in place.
  • Speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree in a relevant discipline or demonstrate ability and experience to work at Masters level.

Experience

  • Significant experience working in general management within the sector.
  • Experience of leadership at a senior management level and managing large teams.
  • Sound knowledge of national strategies and developments within the NHS.
  • Experience with audits and inspections.

Skills

  • Demonstrable ability to deal with complex situations.
  • Ability to make and take difficult decisions after analysis of options and implications.
  • Highly developed communication skills (written, oral, presentation and interpersonal).

Special Knowledge

  • Knowledge and experience of service improvement skills, tools and techniques.
  • Detailed understanding and experience of the management of the NHS.
  • Commitment to the UHBs values and behaviours.
  • Self‑motivated, enthusiasm to succeed, integrity, tenacity, inspiring and motivational.
