Overview

The Ultra Engineering function manages a portfolio of specialist capabilities, generating highly differentiated solutions and products by applying electronic, mechanical, and software technologies in demanding and critical environments to meet customer needs. The Project/Systems Engineering function in Ultra provides expertise to all projects through the bid and full development lifecycle. It ensures that both project and statutory requirements are met and works to improve the effectiveness of the systems design function within the company. It is responsible for the system architecture and integration of the solution, design for cost and design for manufacture. A professional at this grade applies technical and professional knowledge, making independent judgments based on practice and significant previous experience to support decision making. They are seen as a referral point or more senior team member to raise more complex problems, act independently with minimal guidance, and may serve as project managers or formal mentors for junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Execute the engineering delivery of a programme and numerous projects of a variety of sizes.
  • Support the Programme Management team in planning and scheduling and propose optimisations to improve schedule logic.
  • Identify resource needs in good time, coordinate with discipline leads, ensure requirements are always met, and provide input to long‑term recruitment strategy.
  • Ensure engineering artefacts for the programme/projects are delivered to budget and schedule, and strive to beat schedule while delivering improved margin.
  • Raise resource concerns or other impediments, propose and manage solutions with limited support.
  • Articulate and quantify technical risks and actively manage mitigation to minimise risk to programme/projects.
  • Maintain the engineering budget on the programme/projects; monitor and forecast costs, and implement remedial measures for overspend or schedule slip.
  • Coordinate all engineering resources, performing day‑to‑day tasking.
  • Provide input required for business and customer reporting and propose improved means of monitoring and reporting.
  • Represent the company on the programme/projects with customers, suppliers, and subcontractors; ensure all engineering work is pre‑authorised and propose cheaper, quicker solutions.
  • Propose improvements and drive innovation to increase programme/project margin.
  • Resolve concerns with other functions such as production engineering and test systems, optimizing business needs across all functions.
  • Manage security of information as defined in the Security manual.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or suitable Defence/Aerospace industry experience.
  • Significant experience and full understanding of Systems Engineering, the lifecycle, System of Systems principles, capability delivery, development models, and associated processes.
  • Experience developing high‑quality requirements and establishing fully compliant capability/solution.
  • Experience implementing the full Engineering lifecycle as per ISO/IEEE/IEC standards and fundamental practices, principles, and processes.
  • Technical and line‑management experience of a team of systems engineers across a programme or set of projects.
  • Experience writing high‑quality technical documentation and conducting formal technical reviews.
  • Substantial knowledge of Systems Engineering practices, methodologies, processes, techniques, technology trends, and appropriate tools.
  • Hands‑on experience of capability development of hardware, software, or firmware embedded solutions.

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • INCOSE recognition
  • CSEP/ESEP
  • Experience working as a technical SME and developing new areas of expertise as required
  • Familiarity with NCSC security processes and delivery of associated security artefacts

Security Clearance Requirements

Due to the nature of the programmes we deliver for our customers, candidates may need to obtain the relevant security clearance or handle export‑controlled material as defined by the role’s requirements. Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance for the role. You must be a British citizen who has been resident in the UK for the past five years to apply for SC clearance and ten years for DV clearance.
