Job Description:

Xplor Technologies powers the experiences at the heart of everyday life. Through modern vertical software, embedded payments, and AI‑powered capabilities, we help businesses in fitness, recreation, golf and club, field services, laundry, education, and other membership‑based and service‑based industries simplify operations, uncover insights, and elevate customer and member experiences.

About the opportunity

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to join our team working on a well‑established payments and subscription platform built primarily around the Microsoft technology stack. Reporting into the Engineering Manager, you’ll work across the full SDLC covering new feature development, operational support, automated testing, troubleshooting, platform modernisation and stability.

You’ll work in an environment that blends established systems with active modernisation efforts, giving you real influence over architecture, engineering practices, platform direction, and overall software quality. There are strong opportunities for technical growth, with hands‑on involvement in solution design, modernisation initiatives, and evolving engineering standards.

This role is fully remote across the UK, with occasional meet‑ups at our Newcastle office. You must have full working rights.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance applications built using the Microsoft stack.
  • Work across a mixture of modern and legacy components within an established product environment.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve application defects and production issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis on recurring issues and implement sustainable long‑term improvements.
  • Identify opportunities for incremental modernisation and technical improvement.
  • Contribute to modernisation initiatives, including architectural improvements, service decomposition, platform scalability, and engineering process enhancements.
  • Support and maintain SQL Server databases, queries, and stored procedures.
  • Develop and maintain APIs and backend services using .NET / .NET Core and C#.
  • Contribute to frontend development using Angular.
  • Participate in code reviews and collaborative development practices.
  • Contribute to technical decision‑making, engineering standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Design, clearly document, and review scalable technical solutions aligned to business and technical requirements.
  • Support CI/CD pipelines and cloud‑hosted environments within AWS.
  • Contribute to testing activities, including automated testing and quality‑focused development practices.
  • Participate in an out‑of‑hours on‑call rota supporting priority incidents where required.
  • Work collaboratively with technical and non‑technical stakeholders to deliver reliable business solutions.
  • Contribute actively to team capability growth.

Required Technical Skills & Experience

  • Strong commercial software engineering experience, ideally with at least two years of hands‑on experience using C#.
  • Experience with .NET / .NET Core.
  • Experience working with SQL Server, including writing and optimising queries and database objects.
  • Frontend development experience with Angular.
  • Experience supporting and enhancing established enterprise applications.
  • Comfortable working across a mix of modern and legacy environments.
  • Good understanding of API development and backend services.
  • Experience with scalable distributed systems and service‑oriented architectures.

Modern Software Engineering and Architecture

  • Strong understanding of modern software engineering principles and architectural patterns.
  • Experience or strong understanding of Domain‑Driven Design (DDD).
  • Experience with microservices architecture, event‑driven systems, and distributed systems design.

Solution Design and Architecture

  • Ability to design, clearly document, and review scalable solution designs aligned to technical initiatives and business requirements.
  • Experience contributing to architectural discussions and driving pragmatic technical improvements across existing platforms.
  • Ability to balance short‑term operational priorities with long‑term maintainability, scalability, and modernisation goals.

Cloud and DevOps

  • Experience working with AWS environments and services.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
  • Understanding of cloud‑based application hosting and operational support.

Testing and Quality

  • Unit testing.
  • System and integration testing.
  • Performance testing.
  • Security testing.
  • Test automation frameworks and practices.
  • Experience embedding QA practices into the development lifecycle.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to proactively raise risks, blockers, and concerns.
  • Confidence contributing to technical discussions and collaborating with engineers, product stakeholders, support teams, and business users.
  • Comfortable working across both technical and non‑technical conversations.

AI‑Assisted Development

  • Use of AI‑assisted coding tools such as Claude or similar platforms.
  • Experience working within teams adopting AI‑assisted development workflows.
  • Strong interest in using AI tools and practices to improve engineering productivity, software quality, delivery efficiency, and code and library modernisation.

Ideal Candidate Attributes

  • Be comfortable contributing ideas and influencing technical direction within the team.
  • Balance platform enhancement and modernisation initiatives with operational support responsibilities.
  • Enjoy solving complex technical problems and addressing root causes rather than applying short‑term fixes.
  • Take a pragmatic approach to modernisation, engineering quality, and architectural evolution.
  • Be interested in improving engineering practices, scalability, maintainability, and developer experience over time.
  • Be open‑minded about new technologies and evolving development practices.
  • Be comfortable working independently and taking ownership where required.
  • Communicate clearly and work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Maintain a positive, professional attitude and a good sense of humour.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience modernising legacy applications.
  • Experience designing or implementing microservices, distributed systems, or event‑driven architectures.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tooling.
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery environments.
  • Exposure to secure development practices and DevSecOps approaches.
  • Experience contributing to architectural roadmaps or modernisation strategies.
  • Exposure to AI‑assisted engineering workflows and modern software delivery practices.
  • Experience acting as a technical lead, informal mentor, or subject matter expert within engineering teams.

Benefits

  • Paid Parental Leave benefit programs.
  • GiveBack Days – three extra days off to volunteer and give back to the local community.
  • Ongoing dedication to Diversity & Inclusion initiatives such as D&I Council and Global Mentorship Program.
  • Access to free mental health support.
