About the role
We are seeking an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) to support the centralised Hammersmith & Fulham AMHP Duty Service.
The successful candidate must be qualified and experienced as an Approved Mental Health Professional with recognised qualifications, current regulatory registration (e.g. Social Work England) and evidence of ongoing professional development and AMHP approval/Authorisation.
They will demonstrate significant post‑qualification experience working within a multidisciplinary mental health or community setting, with applied knowledge of legislation including the Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005, Human Rights Act 1998, and relevant statutory guidance.
The postholder will undertake the full range of AMHP duties: coordinating and leading Mental Health Act assessments, making complex and defensible decisions, ensuring interventions are lawful, proportionate, and grounded in a human rights‑based approach.
They will manage complex risk, conduct safeguarding enquiries under Section 42 of the Care Act, and chair multi‑agency meetings where required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, including the ability to engage effectively in challenging situations, influence professional decision‑making, and provide expert advice and guidance to colleagues and partner organisations.
They will maintain accurate and timely recording in line with organisational and legal standards, and actively manage workload within a dynamic AMHP Duty environment.
A commitment to continuous professional development and up‑to‑date knowledge of legislation, policy and best practice is essential. Experience or willingness to undertake additional roles such as Practice Assessor or Best Interest Assessor is expected in line with Adult Social Care service development.
